Meyer and McGuire Present Ian, Ron, and Lyle Boni in the "Side room"

Hi,

I hope the upcoming holiday season brings you many great times with your family and friends! Now, here’s what I have for you in this post.

This blog started out giving you posts of the songwriter’s notes, lyrics, and music for my original songs. As with many things, it has gone in new directions. So, if you just started reading my post and are interested in my original material, here is a link to my songwriter’s notes, lyrics, and music.

On Thursday, 12/19, Ian, Ron, and Lyle Boni will be our performers at the “Singer/Songwriters in the Side Room” concert. If these names are not familiar to you, maybe Troyka, Naked Gray, In The Loop, The Rolling Bones, The Hayes Brothers, and Hazer will ring a bell. Ian and Lyle are, and were, the driving forces of these groups for nearly forty years.

I first ran into Lyle in the 1970s when he was the singer and lead guitar player of the renowned Hayes Brothers, a group who got its start in Shortsville. For nearly four decades this band brought many great nights of music to a myriad of clubs and private parties throughout the Finger Lakes region. After George Hayes, the last of the Hayes brothers, left the group, the band changed its name to Hazer, and now with Lyle’s son, Ian, they continue to play great rock n roll music throughout the area.

I first ran into Ian in the 1990s at Canandaigua Academy, the high school where I taught. He was not one of my students, but I watched his talents develop from a distance. Like Lyle, Ian is a phenomenal guitar player, and when the two perform together in The Rolling Bones, they are simply outstanding. In addition to the Rolling Bones, Ian is the lead guitar player and singer in Troyka, Naked Gray, and In The Loop.

Now, what about Ron Boni? When I first asked Ian to do this show as a solo performer, he said he would like to ask his Uncle Ron to join him, because he thought he was a terrific songwriter who is rarely heard. Ron, a busy massage therapist, does not perform very much publicly. I saw him play with Lyle in a small club several years ago, and Ian is right. He’s good!

A few days ago, Ian informed me that Lyle was going to join him and Ron for this show. So, The Boni’s are coming together to give you an evening of their original music in an intimate setting. You may get them to do one or two covers, but do not count on much more than that. You will hear the stories and songs that reflect their experiences and observations. Hope you can join us on December 19 when the Boni family comes back to where music all started for Ron and Lyle, Shortsville, NY!

The concert takes place on the third Thursday of every month in the side room of Buffalo Bill’s Family Restaurant and Taproom, 19 Main Street, Shortsville, NY. The show runs from 7 to 9 PM. The concert is free; however, we compensate the performers with whatever donations we can gather from the audience. To learn more about Buffalo Bill’s, check out their site right here:

Leslie Lee and Steve Gretz and Perry Cleaveland were our guests in November. To give you a feel of the setting of these concerts, here is a video of the group doing one of Leslie and Steve’s songs, “Immigrants.”

Meyer and McGuire: News and Music Schedule

Hi,

Hope you all had a great Thanksgiving, and I hope the upcoming holiday season brings you many great times with your family and friends!

As always, thanks for supporting original music! Leslie Lee and Steve Gretz and Perry Cleaveland put on a great show at the “Singer/Songwriters in the Side Room” concert in November. Siobhan will have a video of one of their songs from that show ready for my next update in a couple of weeks. In the meantime, I just want to give you a little introduction to Ian and Ron Boni, the duo who will be performing at our next “Singer/Songwriters in the Side Room” concert at Buffalo Bill’s on December 19 from 7 to 9 PM. Ian, an accomplished guitar player and songwriter who performs with several groups, is getting together with his Uncle Ron for this show. When I first asked Ian to do the concert, he asked me if he could do the show with Ron because he felt Ron was a terrific songwriter who very rarely performs. I’ll have more details about them as we get closer to the show, but if you have the time, check out these videos of Ian with his group Troyka at the Lilac Festival in 2012. Fear not. You will not be hearing Troyka at the next concert in the side room. I only encourage you to listen to these videos to get a sense of Ian’s talent. It’s terrific, and I am sure when he hooks up with Ron, you will get a great evening of original acoustic music!

Well, Siobhan and I finally got off our lazy butts and recorded the basic tracks for four new original songs at Rich Cooley’s studio. Rich, a friend and neighbor, lives .4 miles from our house; so, it doesn’t get any better. After the holidays, we are bringing Bob Spadafora and Perry Cleaveland, two of the nicest guys you would ever want to meet, into Rich’s studio to dress up our basic tracks. If you are from the Auburn area, you may know Bob. He was the lead guitar player for the legendary Blue Lights for over thirty years. Currently, Bob is the lead guitar player for Streetwise, a well-known rock group in the Rochester area, and Bob is the lead singer and guitar player in Key Dreamers, a local acoustic duo. Now, if you don’t know Perry, you are not from this galaxy. Just like Raymond, “Everybody Loves Perry!” He has played and recorded with so many groups it would be impossible to list them all here. As Bob is with a guitar, so Perry is with a mandolin and fiddle, and we are excited to have them add their talents to our new songs. The songs are as follows: “Livin’ Small,“ “Last Man Standing,” “Just One,” and “When You Were Cute and I Had All MY Hair.” If you haven’t heard these songs, here is a link to videos of Siobhan and me rehearsing them on our back porch:

If you have any suggestions regarding what instruments we should add to the basic tracks, send them to me. We’d appreciate it!

Well, have to go for now. Below is a list of our dates for December. Hope to catch you at a show! Take care and have a great holiday season!

All the best,
Siobhan and Frank
