Hi,

Hope all of you are doing well! Here’s what I have for you this month.

This blog started out giving you posts of the songwriter’s notes, lyrics, and music for my original songs. As with many things, it has gone in new directions. So, if you just started reading my post and are interested in my original material, here is a link to "Set Yourself Free," one of my original songs. You can read about the song’s history, review the lyrics, and listen to the song. If you want to add the song to your playlist, you can download it at Amazon or iTunes.

Our Open mic on December 13 at Brew and Brats at Arbor Hill, an eatery and entertainment center behind the Arbor Hill Winery & Grapery was another grand time! "SINGER/SONGWRITERS IN THE SIDE ROOM" PRESENTS EVA AND THE DOG BOYS

Hi,

This blog started out giving you posts of the songwriter’s notes, lyrics, and music for my original songs. As with many things, it has gone in new directions. So, if you just started reading my post and are interested in my original material, here is a link to "Your Local Star," one of my original songs. You can read about the song’s history, review the lyrics, and listen to the song. If you want to add the song to your playlist, you can download it at Amazon or iTunes.

On Thursday, 12/18, Eva and the Dog Boys will be our performers in the “Side room” at Buffalo Bill’s. This engaging trio, known for delivering its bluegrass music with attitude, will focus on its original material for this show. Regarding the band members, here’s what I found on their web site:
“John (MandoBoy) Denniston - Mandolin and Tenor/Lead Vocals JD can’t hide anymore - he’s developed into one of the Northeast’s top mandolin players. As a lifelong resident of Palmyra, he and his patient wife, Maureen, have three children. Steeped in the classic Bill Monroe mandolin-playing tradition, John has developed into a serious musical performer. “MandoBoy” has also greatly extended his vocal range to become a key lead and tenor voice. He has been a part of Seneca County Bluegrass, Lisa Bigwood and The Washday Band, and Cabin Fever.

Tom (TBone) Farley – Guitar virtuoso and sometimes old time banjo picker brings a thoughtful appreciation for all kinds of acoustic music and usually is pivotal in the instrumental arranging of the new songs. As a guitarist and frequent lead vocalist (he also sings baritone), “Bone” owns our single microphone so we’re extra special nice to him. His playing experience includes Lisa Bigwood and The Washday Band, Cuttin’ the Grass, The New Aliens, and many revisits of The Dugway Dirt Band.
TBone is married to the lovely Suzanne and they have a beautiful daughter, daughter in-law, grandson, Alex - and new grandson, Lance.

Elaine (Eva) Verstraete Bassist and lead/tenor vocalist is a fast study. Elaine is in real life a respected illustrator and university faculty member, who draws from a wide-ranging musical background. She has a restless desire to sing almost anything and has drawn heavily from her strong family musical history. Known for her photogenic Germanic face, her athletic figure, and survivalist instincts, she leads by example. Eva draws from a wonderful musical experience with Lisa Bigwood and The Washday Band and is currently one half of regional recording artists , birds-on-a-wire, with her close friend, Brooke Pevear.”

Here is a video of Eva and the Dog Boys doing one of TBone’s songs, “Behind the Soccer Ball.”
Here is a video of Eva and the Dog Boys doing one of TBone’s songs, “Belinno and Carnes.”
To learn more about Eva and the Dog Boys, click here. Hope you can join us for the show!

The concert is free, but we do ask for donations to support our performers. Siobhan has created two CDs, one for each of our two seasons. Each CD contains songs of the performers who appeared during that season. The requested donation for each CD is $10, and the proceeds go to the performers who are playing on the night of the donation. The CDs have gotten good reviews, and we hope they get passed around to let others know about the great talent we have appearing at this venue.

The concerts take place on the first and third Thursdays of each month in the side room of Buffalo Bill’s Family Restaurant and Taproom (19 Main Street, Shortsville, NY). The show runs from 7 to 9 PM. To learn more about Buffalo Bill’s, check out their site right here:

"SINGER/SONGWRITERS IN THE SIDE ROOM" PRESENTS KERRY REGAN

Hi,

This blog started out giving you posts of the songwriter’s notes, lyrics, and music for my original songs. As with many things, it has gone in new directions. So, if you just started reading my post and are interested in my original material, here is a link to my Songwriter’s Notes, Lyrics, and Music.

On Thursday, 12/4, Kerry Regan will be our performer in the “Side room” at Buffalo Bill’s. Kerry, who regularly performs with the group, Watkins and the Rapiers, will be showcasing a special show of his original material. I hope this little description from the Watkins and the Rapiers’ web site entices you to come to Kerry’s show!
“We play mostly original music, written by the band’s four songwriters. It’s Americana music, folk music with a beat, exploring many genres, rather than calculating a sound to fit a marketing category.

We had our first performance in January 1996. At the time, we weren’t a band, but friends who took turns hosting a weekly hootenanny / jam session with other musicians. The date, at the Rose & Crown, was arranged by our crowd’s mandolin / fiddle player, but the opportunity came up too quickly, and he was unable to participate. So Scott Regan asked the mandolin / fiddle player from his band, the Water Street Boys, to join us that night. Always up for a musical challenge, Bruce Diamond accepted. He raised us to a new level, and the next thing we knew, we were the bar’s Wednesday night band.

For that first job, bar manager Will Taggert had taken out an ad in advance, before he knew who would perform. He called the band Watkins and the Rapiers, the name of his own band from his teenage years in England. (The name derived from an inexpensive electric guitar from the 1960s, the Watkins Rapier.) We didn’t have a name and figured taking on the bar owner’s choice was good politics. And that’s how we became Watkins & the Rapiers.

A few months into the gig, Bruce invited his old band mate, drummer Marty York, to sit in. Soon he was a regular, and our original six-member lineup was in place. We played about a year of Wednesday nights before we had a practice. It was fun, like bowling night, Bruce noted. We played a wide-ranging repertoire, including many original songs along with covers by the likes of Donovan, Steve Earle, Roger Miller, the Morells, John Prine, Jonathan Richman and the Troggs.

We began to practice only after we decided to record a CD of some of our original songs. That CD, Play Along with Watkins & the Rapiers, was recorded and released in 1997. In 1998 we staged the first of our annual Christmas shows. By writing a few new songs for that show each year, we have amassed more than 40 original Christmas songs.

By 1999, accordionist/guitarist/songwriter Rob Goodwin was preparing to move to Bozeman, Mont. To ensure we had a record of the leading songs in our repertoire, we recorded our second CD, What Ever Happened to Watkins and the Rapiers.

We took some time off after Rob left, and then reformed in 2002 as a five-piece, often with friends sitting in. In May 2006, we went back into the studio to record about two dozen songs, half of which are on our third CD, It’s Christmas, Baby!, which we released at our 2006 Christmas shows. The rest were released in 2010 on The Return of Watkins & the Rapiers.

In between, in 2007, two players who had been sitting in with us became full-time members: Steve Piper, who mainly plays electric guitar with the band, and Rick McRae on trombone and keyboards.

We continue to play at pubs, coffeehouses, cafes, concert halls, festivals, fundraisers and farmer’s markets.
The Band’s Members

MEYER AND MCGUIRE: NEWS AND MUSIC SCHEDULE

Hi,

Hope all of you are doing well! Here’s what I have for you this month.

This blog started out giving you posts of the songwriter’s notes, lyrics, and music for my original songs. As with many things, it has gone in new directions. So, if you just started reading my post and are interested in my original material, here is a link to my Songwriter’s Notes, Lyrics, and Music.

Our regular show on Oct 11 and our Open mic on November 8 at Brew and Brats at Arbor Hill, an eatery and entertainment center behind the Arbor Hill Winery & Grapery were two terrific nights! On October 11, the “Mando Master,” Perry Cleaveland, joined us and ignited the crowd with his mandolin and fiddle, making it another successful outing at B&B! We’d like to thank Jack Jones, Kendall Paul Wilt, Bob Dugan, T-Bone Farley, and Tom Hawks for contributing some great tunes to make the November 8 open mic a splendid one! Our next open mic at Brew and Brats will be on December 13. Details for this open mic are at the end of this message. Whether we are running an open mic or playing a regular show, Brew and Brats is always a good time! Hope you can Join Siobhan and me on December 13!

As always, thanks for supporting original music! The “Singer/Songwriter in the Side Room” series at Buffalo Bill’s is going well, and we have moved to two shows a month, the first and third Thursdays. Since my last general update, we have had two great shows in the “Side Room,” Rick Hoyt and Cool Club on October 16 and The Cadleys on November 6. Below are two videos, one from each show:
Rick Hoyt and Cool Club
"White Men in Business Suits"
The Cadleys
"The Only Thing Missing Is You"
John Dady will be our guest on November 20, and Kerry Regan will be our guests on December 4. Stay tuned for more details about these shows in my upcoming post. Hope you can join us for these performances!

For those of you who follow us at Rio Tomatlan, we’d like to give you an update. Rio sustained a fire in late May. The restaurant suffered a great deal of damage, and Rio will be reopening at its new location in Canandaigua at 106 Bemix Street, the previous site of the Lumber Yard. Before Rio reopens, however, the old Lumber Yard will need some major renovation, and the new Rio will most likely not open until this fall. Back on August 10, Siobhan, Perry Cleaveland, and I played at a benefit to help the workers at Rio Tomatlan. Buffalo Bill’s offered its restaurant as a location for the benefit. Well, it was a grand time and very successful! Rafael Guevara, the owner, hopes to reopen Rio Tomatlan sometime in December. Stay tuned for another update in early December!

Since we are in Rochester every Tuesday, Siobhan and I started hosting a little jam session at Sheridan’s Pub on Tuesdays from 4 to 7 PM. The songs can be Irish, but they do not have to be. Stop by with your instruments and join us at the table, or just come and enjoy the music! Delicious food, happy hour drink specials, and friendly patrons!

Well, have to go for now. Below is a list of some of our upcoming dates. Hope to catch you at a show! Take care!

All the best,
Siobhan and Frank

"SINGER/SONGWRITERS IN THE SIDE ROOM" PRESENTS JOHN AND CATHY CADLEY

Hi,

This blog started out giving you posts of the songwriter’s notes, lyrics, and music for my original songs. As with many things, it has gone in new directions. So, if you just started reading my post and are interested in my original material, here is a link to my Songwriter’s Notes, Lyrics, and Music.

On Thursday, 11/6, John and Cathy Cadley will be our performers in the “Side room” at Buffalo Bill’s. I hope this little description from their web site entices you to come to their show!

“John and Cathy Cadley are one of the area’s most entertaining and popular duos. Following in the tradition of great male-female duets like Ian & Sylvia and Emmylou Harris and Gram Parsons, they show how the simplicity of two voices and two acoustic instruments can produce powerful music.
Their repertoire draws on the traditional bluegrass of Bill Monroe and the Stanley Brothers, the tight harmonies of the Louvin Brothers, the “new acoustic” sounds of Alison Krauss and Claire Lynch, and John’s own originals, which have been recorded by national bluegrass artists such as Tony Trischka, Jim Hurst, Missy Raines, and Lou Reid, who, with Vince Gill and Ricky Skaggs singing harmony, took John’s song, “Time,” to the #1 spot on the national bluegrass charts for three consecutive months. Cathy’s resume is equally impressive, including 21 years leading a church and gospel group in her hometown of Fayetteville, NY.
Their live concerts feature everything from traditional mountain ballads and bluegrass classics like “Bury Me Beneath the Willow” and “Blue and Lonesome,” to Alison Krauss’ “The Lucky One,” to the Louvin Brother’s “Cash on the Barrelhead.” And just to add a few surprises, you’ll also hear a great acoustic rendition of Paul McCartney’s “I Will,” a few of John’s originals from his Nashville-produced solo CD, The Closer I Get, and Cathy’s knockout version of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” For an evening of soulful duet singing and tasty picking on guitar and mandolin, the Cadleys are not to me missed.”

To give you a feel of John and Cathy’s style, here is a video of them doing John’s number one song, "Time." To learn more about John and Cathy, you can check them out right here. Hope you can join us for this show!

"SINGER/SONGWRITERS IN THE SIDE ROOM" PRESENTS RICK HOYT AND COOL CLUB

Hi,

This blog started out giving you posts of the songwriter’s notes, lyrics, and music for my original songs. As with many things, it has gone in new directions. So, if you just started reading my post and are interested in my original material, here is a link to my Songwriter’s Notes, Lyrics, and Music.

On Thursday, 10/16, Rick Hoyt will be our performer in the “Side room” at Buffalo Bill’s. He will be accompanied by two members of the Rick Hoyt Quintet, Perry Cleaveland and Doug Henry. Rick delivers his lyrics in a style that may best be described as a rocking jump jazz blues mixed with some boogie-woogie ragtime swing. Rick’s guitar playing is second to none, and when he gets together with Perry Cleaveland (mandolin and fiddle) and Doug Henry (standup bass), it’s an explosion of great high energy music. Perry and Doug, who are well-known in the bluegrass arena, seem to adapt to Rick’s original material with ease.

In Rick’s first show in the “Side Room,” almost two years ago, he had Tom McClure and Oscar Yuan accompanying him. To give you a feel of Rick’s style and the energy his music generates, here is a video from that Performance. "I Can’t Be Any Better Than I Am," one of Rick’s songs, serves as an excellent example of what to expect if you come to this concert. Hope you can join us for this show

The concert is free, but we do ask for donations to support our performers. Siobhan has created two CDs, one for each of our two seasons.

Our Open mic on September 12 at Brew and Brats at Arbor Hill, an eatery and entertainment center behind the Arbor Hill Winery & Grapery was memorable! We’d like to thank Jack Jones, Kendall Paul Wilt, Fran Cary, Duncan Walls, and Jimmy Gleason for contributing some great tunes to make the night a splendid one! Our next regular show at Brew and Brats will be on October 11. The “Mando Master,” Perry Cleaveland, will be joining us for this show with his mandolin and fiddle. Details for this show are at the end of this message. Whether we are running an open mic or playing a regular show, Brew and Brats is always a good time! Hope you can Join Siobhan, Perry, and me on October 11!

As always, thanks for supporting original music! The “Singer/Songwriter in the Side Room” series at Buffalo Bill’s is going well, and we have moved to two shows a month, the first and third Thursdays. Since my last general update, we have had two shows in the “Side Room,” Marc Black on September 18 and Tom Whitmore on October 1. Below is a video from each show:
Marc Black
”When the Earth Was Big”
Tom Whitmore
”The Truth”
Rick Hoyt, Perry Cleaveland, and Doug Henry will be our guest on October 16, and Cathy and John Cadley will be our guests on Nov. 6. Stay tuned for more details about these shows in my upcoming post. Hope you can join us for these shows!

Rafael Guevara, the owner, hopes to reopen Rio Tomatlan sometime in November. Stay tuned for another update in early November!

For those of you who like traditional Irish music, here is a little heads-up regarding a great little happening every Sunday Afternoon in Rochester. From Noon to …, John Michael Ryan conducts a traditional session around one of the tables at Sheridan’s Pub. Sometime in the early evening, the session turns into an Americana session. Whether you are a player or a listener, it’s a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon or evening. Siobhan and I catch the sessions whenever we can, and it’s always a good time! Check it out if you get a chance! You won’t be disappointed!

Well, have to go for now. Below is a list of some of our upcoming dates. Hope to catch you at a show! Take care!

All the best,
Siobhan and Frank

"SINGER/SONGWRITERS IN THE SIDE ROOM" PRESENTS TOM WHITMORE

Hi,

This blog started out giving you posts of the songwriter’s notes, lyrics, and music for my original songs. As with many things, it has gone in new directions. So, if you just started reading my post and are interested in my original material, here is a link to my Songwriter’s Notes, Lyrics, and Music.

On Thursday, 10/2, Tom Whitmore will be our performer in the “Side room” at Buffalo Bill’s. Tom, a seasoned veteran of the music scene in the Syracuse and Rochester area, has been a contributing songwriter to the well-known Watkins and the Rapiers since its beginning in 1996. Since Tom does not have a web site of his own, here is a brief history of his band:

In 2004, we released the studio recordings we’d done in 1999, as Whatever Happened to Watkins and the Rapiers. In May 2006, we went back into the studio to record about two dozen songs, half of which are on our third CD, It’s Christmas, Baby!, which we released at our 2006 Christmas shows. The rest will be coming out soon on a new CD.

Scott Regan (guitar, percussion and vocals) — the older of the two Regan brothers is one of the band’s four songwriters. He was a finalist in the Rounder Records songwriter contest, circa 1991. Co-founder with Colorblind James of the Water Street Boys, an Upstate New York jug band that has been active for more than two decades. Also performs solo. Has recorded two other CDs, one solo, the other with the Water Street Boys. morning disc jockey on WRUR-FM.

Kerry Regan (bass, guitar, harmonica and vocals) — Another songwriter, he has played in rock and bluegrass bands and solo in New York City and Upstate New York. Featured Saturday night performer at the Landmark “Toy Bar” in Park Slope, Brooklyn, in 1980s. Led the Electric Mudpies, who had radio airplay in major markets in 1991. Former music critic. Day job: marketing and public relations writer.

Tom Whitmore (bass, guitar, mandolin and vocals) — Another of the band's songwriters, “Whit” has performed for more than a quarter century, including a stint as lead guitarist with the Syracuse-based quartet, the Sputniks, which included two other Regan brothers, Phil and Craig. Has a strong repertoire of campfire sing-alongs. Day job: telecommunications executive.

Marty York (drums, percussion, washboard and vocals) — A 20-plus-year veteran of the Rochester music scene, Marty has played in dozens of bands over the years. His earliest performances included lip-synching to Alvin and the Chipmunks as a seven-year old and playing drums on Roger Miller songs at a sixth grade spaghetti dinner. His career highlight: meeting Ed Begley, Jr., Spinal Tap’s original drummer. Day job: dental lab manager.

Steve Piper (guitar, ukulele and vocals) — Steve Piper is a songwriter and performer who has two solo CDs. His style is roughly in the folk/country tradition, but he also loves Mozart, Stravinsky, Satie, John Coltrane, Hank Williams, Sandy Denny, Miles Davis, Merle Haggard, Capt. Beefheart, Johnny Hartman, those Texas people like Townes Van Zandt, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Guy Clark, Al Strehi and others. He also photographs and draws. Day job: photographer with Gelfand-Piper Photography.

Rick McRae (trombone, keyboards) — Rick's escapades with the trombone have been multifaceted. He has performed in blues, rock, orchestral, chamber, salsa, klezmer, African-based, and experimental ensembles. He has recorded and performed with They Might Be Giants, and bands devoted to the music of Frank Zappa, Sun Ra and John Zorn. Once he played two gigs on the same day — in New York City and Toronto. And he has also played trombone while neck deep in a Maine lake. In addition to Watkins, Rick also plays with the Outer Circle Orchestra, 12 Corners Klezmer Band, BioCentrics, and whoever wants him to sit in during open mic night at the Flipside Bar & Grill. Day job: music librarian.”

Our last show on August 9 at Brew and Brats at Arbor Hill, an eatery and entertainment center behind the Arbor Hill Winery & Grapery was another great time! We’d like to thank Skip Buck for joining us on stage with some great backup harmonies! Unfortunately, Joe and Amy Preston, two great workers at Brew and Brats, have moved on to open My Buddy Joe’s, a store specializing in distributing beverages and snacks. Joe often closed out the evening with us at Brew and Brats with his harmonica, and we will miss him very much! My Buddy Joe’s grand opening is on October 3! So, mark your calendar! Our next regular show at Brew and Brats will be on October 25. In the meantime, we will be doing an open mic at Brew and Brats on September 12. Details for this show are at the end of this message. Whether we are running an open mic or playing a regular show, Brew and Brats is always a good time! Hope you can Join Siobhan and me on September 12!

As always, thanks for supporting original music! Steve Piper put on a great show at the “Singer/Songwriters in the Side Room” concert in August. Siobhan will have a video of one of Steve’s songs from that show ready for my next update in a couple of weeks. In the meantime, I just want to give you a little introduction to Marc Black, the songwriter who will be performing at the next concert at Buffalo Bill’s on September 18. "SINGER/SONGWRITERS IN THE SIDE ROOM" PRESENTS STEVE PIPER

Hi,

This blog started out giving you posts of the songwriter’s notes, lyrics, and music for my original songs. As with many things, it has gone in new directions. So, if you just started reading my post and are interested in my original material, here is a link to my Songwriter’s Notes, Lyrics, and Music.

On Thursday, 8/21, Steve Piper will be our performer in the “Side room” at Buffalo Bill’s. Steve, who accompanied Jed Curran with some great licks from his guitar in last month’s show, will be doing a solo show of his original music. Here is what Pat Maloney, an awesome songwriter, has to say about Steve’s music. “Steve Piper's songs are filled with the kind of longing you get when you are alone, but warm and dry on a rainy night - little circles of light in a dark and stormy world. I hear flashes of Buddy Holly and the Everly Brothers peering in from the darkness. I am nostalgic for Steve's past and want to join him, through his songs, as he slouches off towards Kansas City, searching for the truth.”
Here is a video of Steve doing “This House,” at his show in the “Side Room” at Buffalo Bill’s in 2012.
Here is a video of Steve doing “Never Gets Old” his show in the “Side Room” at Buffalo Bill’s in 2013.
In addition to being a great songwriter and guitar player, Steve is a terrific photographer and artist. To learn more about him, click here.

The concert takes place on the third Thursday of every month in the side room of Buffalo Bill’s Family Restaurant and Taproom, 19 Main Street, Shortsville, NY. (Starting in October, we will do two shows a month, the first and third Thursdays.) The show runs from 7 to 9 PM. To learn more about Buffalo Bill’s, check out their site right here:

Jed Curran and Steve Piper were our guests in July. To give you a feel of the setting of these concerts, here is a video of the duo doing one of Jed’s songs, "The Rhyming and the Rhythm."

Our last open mic on July 18 at Brew and Brats at Arbor Hill, an eatery and entertainment center behind the Arbor Hill Winery & Grapery was another great time! Special thanks to Jack Jones, Fran Cary, and Harry Lancaster for being part of this open mic! The highlight of the evening for Siobhan and me was closing out the night with Jack Jones and Fran Cary on stage with us! It was another magic moment at Brew and Brats! Our next open mic will be on September 12. So, mark your calendar! In the meantime, we will be doing a regular show at Brew and Brats on August 9. Details for this show are at the end of this message. Whether we are running an open mic or playing a regular show, Brew and Brats is always a good time! Hope you can Join Siobhan and me on August 9!

As always, thanks for supporting original music! Jed Curran and Steve Piper put on a great show at the “Singer/Songwriters in the Side Room” concert in July. Siobhan will have a video of one of Jed’s songs from that show ready for my next update in a couple of weeks. In the meantime, I just want to give you a little introduction to Steve Piper, the songwriter who will be performing at the next concert at Buffalo Bill’s on August 21. Steve, who accompanied Jed Curran with some great licks from his guitar in last month’s show, will be doing a solo show of his original music. Here is a video of Steve doing “This House,” at his show in the “Side Room” at Buffalo Bill’s in 2012. Here is a video of Steve doing “It Never Gets Old” his show in the “Side Room” at Buffalo Bill’s in 2013.

In addition to being a great songwriter and guitar player, Steve is a terrific photographer and artist. To learn more about him, click here. Hope you can join us for the show!

On Sunday, August 10, Bill and Robin Mallwitz, the owners of Buffalo Bill’s in Shortsville, will open their door to Rafael Guevara, the owner of Rio Tomatlan, and his staff so that they can hold a benefit to help the workers at Rio. Siobhan and I will be supplying the music for this event. Rafael and his staff will take over the kitchen at Buffalo Bill’s and be cooking up some of your favorite Mexican dishes. The bartenders will be bartenders from Rio Tomatlan. This event will give you a chance to catch up with the folks at Rio! Tickets for this event are on sale at Buffalo Bill’s. Call Buffalo Bill’s at (585) 2894104 for more information.

Well, have to go for now. Below is a list of our dates for August. Hope to catch you at a show! Take care!

Our last open mic on May 10 at Brew and Brats at Arbor Hill, an eatery and entertainment center behind the Arbor Hill Winery & Grapery was another great time! We are going to do it again on July 18. Details for this open mic are at the end of this post. In June, we did a regular show at Brew and Brats with our good friend Perry Cleaveland, a great mandolin and fiddle player. The weather was beautiful, the music was grand, and the evening was a magical one. The best part for me was catching up with so many old friends. So, whether we are running an open mic or playing a regular show, Brew and Brats is always a good time! Siobhan and I will be there on July 18 to get the show started. If you sing or play an instrument, come on out and be part of the show. If you just want to come and listen, that’s OK too. Either way, you’ll have a blast!

As always, thanks for supporting original music! Bonnie Abrams and Allen Hopkins put on an awesome show at the “Singer/Songwriters in the Side Room” concert in June. Meyer and McGuire: News and Music Schedule

Our last open mic on May 10 at Brew and Brats at Arbor Hill, an eatery and entertainment center behind the Arbor Hill Winery & Grapery was another great time! We are going to do it again in July. Details for this open mic will appear in next month’s music update. Last month we had some terrific performances given by Bob Dugan, Steve Garfield, Bob Mincer, and the amazing Joe Preston. Although all the players were very good, the highlight of the evening for Siobhan and me was getting our good friend, Bob Mincer, to play slide whistle with us to “King of the Road,” a classic Roger Miller tune. Bob was there with his wife, Pat, and their friends, and we really enjoyed playing all of Pat’s favorite tunes. In June, Siobhan and I will be there again. This time, however, we will be doing a regular show with our good friend, Perry Cleaveland. Perry is an awesome mandolin and fiddle player, and he adds a lot to our sound. I think you will enjoy him. Details for this show are at the end of this post. Hope you can make it!

As always, thanks for supporting original music! Connie Deming put on an awesome show at the “Singer/Songwriters in the Side Room” concert in May. Siobhan will have a video of one of Connie’s songs from that show ready for my next update in a couple of weeks. In the meantime, I just want to give you a little introduction to Bonnie Abrams, the songwriter who will be performing at the next concert at Buffalo Bill’s on June 19. "Singer/Songwriters in the Side room" Presents Connie Deming

Hi,

This blog started out giving you posts of the songwriter’s notes, lyrics, and music for my original songs. As with many things, it has gone in new directions. So, if you just started reading my post and are interested in my original material, here is a link to my Songwriter’s Notes, Lyrics, and Music.

On Thursday, 5/15, Connie Deming will be our performer in the “Side room” at Buffalo Bill’s. Connie graciously agreed to fill in for John Dady, the songwriter originally scheduled for this show. John’s show has been rescheduled for November 20. Siobhan and I have followed Connie’s music career from somewhat of a distance over the years, first seeing her at McGinnity’s way back in the 1970s. She has played in many places, and most recently, you will find her at the Little Theater Café in Rochester on Saturday nights. Connie did a show for us back in March of 2013, and it was simply outstanding. With her acoustic guitar, awesome voice, and powerful, thought-provoking lyrics she captivated her audience for two hours. Her heart-warming stories, injected with just the right amount of humor, put her listeners at ease, and it felt like you were sitting with a friend in your living room. Here’s a video of Connie from the 2013 show. Enjoy!
"Across the Table"
Now, if you want to know more about Connie and her interesting, creative endeavors, here is a link to her web site.

The concert takes place on the third Thursday of every month in the side room of Buffalo Bill’s Family Restaurant and Taproom, 19 Main Street, Shortsville, NY. The show runs from 7 to 9 PM. To learn more about Buffalo Bill’s, check out their site right here:

Scott Regan and Perry Cleaveland were our guests in March. To give you a feel of the setting of these concerts, here is a video of the duo doing one of Scott’s songs, "Blue Blue Planet."

Our last open mic on April 12 at Brew and Brats at Arbor Hill, an eatery and entertainment center behind the Arbor Hill Winery & Grapery was another great time! We are going to do it again this month on May 10, and the time and address for this event can be found on our music schedule listed at the end of this post. Last month we had some outstanding performances given by Jim Gleason, Steve Garfield, Meredith, Ryan, and the amazing Joe Preston. Although the players were very good, the highlight of the evening for Siobhan and me was the impromptu jam session that occurred after the open mic was over. About ten women from Buffalo showed up after Brew and Brats was officially closed. They were on a “girls’ gone wild weekend,” and they were unfamiliar with the hours at Brew and Brats. Although everything was packed up, I took out my guitar. Jim Gleason unpacked his banjo, and Joe Preston grabbed his harmonicas. Sitting in the bar with no sound system, we played a set of music that was simply magic. It was one of those moments that transcended time, a place I have been with music on so many many occasions. In May, Siobhan and I will be there again to run the sound. Of course, we will fill in the down-time with our music, but we hope to see many of you show up with your guitars, banjos, mandolins, fiddles, harmonicas, etc. We really enjoy doing what we can to get others out there to play their music! You can perform as a solo, and if you want some backup, we’ll find it for you. If you are not a player, come out and enjoy the food, beverages, and entertainment! Hope to see you there!

As always, thanks for supporting original music! Scott Regan and Perry Cleaveland put on an awesome show at the “Singer/Songwriters in the Side Room” concert in April. Siobhan will have a video of one of Scott’s songs from that show ready for my next update in a couple of weeks. In the meantime, I just want to give you a little introduction to Connie Deming, the songwriter who will be performing at the next concert at Buffalo Bill’s on May 15. I’ll have more details about Connie as we get closer to the show, but if you have the time, check out this video of Connie doing one of her original songs at Buffalo Bill’s in March of 2013.

Well, have to go for now. Below is a list of our dates for May. Hope to catch you at a show! Take care!

All the best,
Siobhan and Frank
