Meyer and McGuire: News and Music Schedule

Hi,

Hope you all had a great Thanksgiving, and I hope the upcoming holiday season brings you many great times with your family and friends! Now, here’s what I have for you in this post.

This blog started out giving you posts of the songwriter’s notes, lyrics, and music for my original songs. As with many things, it has gone in new directions. So, if you just started reading my post and are interested in my original material, here is a link to my songwriter’s notes, lyrics, and music.

As always, thanks for supporting original music! Leslie Lee and Steve Gretz and Perry Cleaveland put on a great show at the “Singer/Songwriters in the Side Room” concert in November. Siobhan will have a video of one of their songs from that show ready for my next update in a couple of weeks. In the meantime, I just want to give you a little introduction to Ian and Ron Boni, the duo who will be performing at our next “Singer/Songwriters in the Side Room” concert at Buffalo Bill’s on December 19 from 7 to 9 PM. Ian, an accomplished guitar player and songwriter who performs with several groups, is getting together with his Uncle Ron for this show. When I first asked Ian to do the concert, he asked me if he could do the show with Ron because he felt Ron was a terrific songwriter who very rarely performs. I’ll have more details about them as we get closer to the show, but if you have the time, check out these videos of Ian with his group Troyka at the Lilac Festival in 2012. Fear not. You will not be hearing Troyka at the next concert in the side room. I only encourage you to listen to these videos to get a sense of Ian’s talent. It’s terrific, and I am sure when he hooks up with Ron, you will get a great evening of original acoustic music!

Well, Siobhan and I finally got off our lazy butts and recorded the basic tracks for four new original songs at Rich Cooley’s studio. Rich, a friend and neighbor, lives .4 miles from our house; so, it doesn’t get any better. After the holidays, we are bringing Bob Spadafora and Perry Cleaveland, two of the nicest guys you would ever want to meet, into Rich’s studio to dress up our basic tracks. If you are from the Auburn area, you may know Bob. He was the lead guitar player for the legendary Blue Lights for over thirty years. Currently, Bob is the lead guitar player for Streetwise, a well-known rock group in the Rochester area, and Bob is the lead singer and guitar player in Key Dreamers, a local acoustic duo. Now, if you don’t know Perry, you are not from this galaxy. Just like Raymond, “Everybody Loves Perry!” He has played and recorded with so many groups it would be impossible to list them all here. As Bob is with a guitar, so Perry is with a mandolin and fiddle, and we are excited to have them add their talents to our new songs. The songs are as follows: “Livin’ Small,“ “Last Man Standing,” “Just One,” and “When You Were Cute and I Had All MY Hair.” If you haven’t heard these songs, here is a link to videos of Siobhan and me rehearsing them on our back porch:

On Thursday, 11/21, Leslie Lee and Steve Gretz will be our performers at the “Singer/Songwriters in the Side Room” concert. Perry Cleaveland, who seems to be the resident mandolin and fiddle player at our concerts, will come downstairs from his apartment over the restaurant and accompany Leslie and Steve for this show. The three of them played a terrific show in 2012, and we are glad to have them back! If you don’t know much about them, here are a few links to check out:

For those of you who are worried about this concert being a church service, relax! Steve is an ordained minister in the American Baptist Churches USA. (They are the Baptist who will talk to you even if you disagree with them.) Steve and Leslie have some great stories, and both have great senses of humor. Trust me! You’ll have fun!

I can’t thank you enough for supporting original music! Eva and the Dog Boys put on a fantastic show at the “Singer/Songwriters in the Side Room” concert in October. Siobhan will have a video of one of their songs from that show ready for my next update in a couple of weeks. In the meantime, I just want to give you a little preview of Leslie Lee and Steve Gretz, the group who will be performing at our next “Singer/Songwriters in the Side Room” concert at Buffalo Bill’s on November 21 from 7 to 9 PM. Perry Cleaveland will be joining Leslie and Steve with his mandolin and fiddle. Meyer and McGuire Present Eva and the Dog Boys

Next Thursday, 10/17, Eva and the Dog Boys will be our performers at the “Singer/Songwriters in the Side Room” concert. The group, John (mandoboy, mandolin) Denniston, Tom (TBone, guitar) Farley, and Elaine (Eva, bass) Verstraete, will deliver a high energy show of acoustic and bluegrass music with attitude! When I listen to this group, the bits of my retinas that are still attached dance around wildly like little blue crystals! Eva has gotten the boys to agree to do their original tunes, and I am sure you will enjoy them even more than their outstanding covers.

Meyer and McGuire: News and Music Schedule

Hope all is well with everyone. Thanks for all your notes regarding what is going on for you. I really enjoy reading them. The weather in the Finger Lakes Region has been simply fantastic for September, and I hope we can keep it going throughout October, especially since we have a couple of outdoor gigs left for this season.

Bill and Robin Mallwitz have been in the restaurant business for thirty years. On September 22, they celebrated this accomplishment at Buffalo Bill’s, and oh what a party it was. Siobhan and I, who have played music at Bill and Robin’s place for about the last twenty-five years, were honored to be asked to play for this occasion, and to spruce up our show, we had Perry Cleaveland join us with his mandolin and fiddle. The turnout for these two fine people was simply overwhelming, and the comments very moving. I commend Bill and Robin for striving to keep alive something that is dying in America, the “third place,” a neighborhood spot where people can just come and visit and exchange ideas freely. Congratulations, Bill and robin! If you did not get a chance to read the Daily Messenger’s article about Bill and Robin, you can read it right here.

Since I am on the topic of Buffalo Bill’s, I just want to give you a little preview of Eva and the Dog Boys, the group who will be performing at our next “Singer/Songwriters in the Side Room” concert on October 17 from 7 to 9 PM. I’ll have more details in a couple of weeks, but if you have the time, check out this video of them at the Smith Opera House in Geneva.

Off Stage With Meyer and McGuire

As always, hope you are all doing well! If you have some time for reading, viewing and listening, here's what I have for you this month.

We're back at it again regarding our "Back Porch Videos!" "Last Man Standing" is a ballad describing how an aging WWII veteran spends his days. The idea and details come from discussions I have had with my father over the past three years. During these talks, he has reminisced about various stages of his life. He has shared details about his growing up in Queens, NY, running away to join the Marine Corps, meeting my mother after WWII, bringing his family to Saugerties, NY, spending many memorable times with my mother and his life-time friends from Saugerties, and coping with being the last one left in his immediate circle of friends. This small group, composed of my mother, Dot and Phil Breithaupt, and Marge and Tom Tynan really knew how to enjoy life. My father often wonders how they are all doing, and he looks forward to catching up with them as soon as he can.

The song, a slow moving sensitive story, depicts an aging man listening to his old records while sitting in his easy chair. As he listens, each tune triggers his memory back to a special moment in his life. Here is a link to the song. As always, any suggestions or feedback will be greatly appreciated. Hope you enjoy it!

The "Singer/Songwriters in the Side Room" concerts at Buffalo Bill's in Shortsville, NY, continue to grow each month. The concerts are on the third Thursday of the month from 7 to 9 PM. In my last post, I played you a video of Jed Curren doing one of his songs, "My Name Is Peter Biss." In this post, we have a video of Rick Hoyt and Cool Club playing his song, "I Can't Be Any Better Than I Am." Rick, who describes his music style as a blend of jump jazz blues with a mixture of boogie woogie swing, ignites the room with help from Tom McClure and Oscar Yuan. The musicianship in this piece is simply fantastic. Here is the video. Hope you enjoy it, and I hope it encourages you to check out this venue. We have some great songwriters in this area, and if you like original music, you owe it to yourself to experience some of these artists. Stay tuned for more videos of other songwriters we have showcased.

Since I am on the topic of the songwriters' series, I want to thank Shawn Middlebrook and some of the members of Misfit Karma for the great show they did for us in July. Shawn and his band are a well-known acoustic folk rock jam band in the Finger Lakes Region, and it was great to see him in an intimate setting sharing his original music. On August 15, we are having Pat Maloney return to the side room for another show. Along with being one of the finest songwriters from this region, Pat is a very entertaining story teller. Here is Pat doing "Good Night Irene Again" at a show he did for us in March of 2012. You can learn more about Pat right here! Hope you can join us on August 15!

Well, once again, it's time for me to stop babbling. Since it is summer, I replace my regular evening walk with a late-night swim in our pool. Swimming under the stars and moon in the quiet of the evening has to be one of the most peaceful experiences there is. As I do my laps, many of you pass through my thoughts, sometimes for a fleeting moment and other times longer. I want to thank you for being in my thoughts. You have contributed to my life much more than you will ever know. So, see you back on the streets sometime in late September!

Off Stage With Meyer and McGuire

As always, hope you are all doing well! If you have some time for reading, viewing and listening, here's what I have for you this month.

Sorry. Still no "Back Porch Video for you. We have the material, but the health issues of our aging parents are keeping us very busy. We do, however, see a little light at the end of the tunnel, and we hope to have one for you in the August post.

The "Singer/Songwriters in the Side Room" concerts at Buffalo Bill's in Shortsville, NY, continue to grow each month. The concerts are on the third Thursday of the month from 7 to 9 PM. In my last post, I played you a video of Joe Dady doing one of his songs, "My Conesus Cabin Home." In this post, we have a video of Jed Curren playing his song, "My Name Is Peter Biss." Jed met Peter Biss, a homeless person from the Streets of Washington D.C., while visiting his daughter. Curren's daughter, a social worker, has a great ability to connect with Peter and people like him, and Jed was very inspired by his daughter's talents. Here is the video. Hope you enjoy it, and I hope it encourages you to check out this venue. We have some great songwriters in this area, and if you like original music, you owe it to yourself to experience some of these artists. Since I am on the topic of the songwriters' series, I want to thank Jeff Riales and Mike Wittek for the great show they did for us in June. Jeff and Mike were our guests last year, and their return performance was terrific. On July 18, we are having Shawn Middlebrook as our guest in the side room. Shawn is the lead singer and guitar player for Misfit Karma, a well-known acoustic folk rock jam band from Phelps, NY. In the side room, Shawn will be doing an evening of his original material.
