M&M SONGWRITERS SERIES PRESENTS WARREN PAUL

Hey Folks,

This blog started out giving you posts of the songwriter’s notes, lyrics, and music for my original songs. As with many things, it has gone in new directions. So, if you just started reading my post and are interested in my original material, here is a link to mySongwriter Notes.

On Sunday, 1/5, Warren Paul will be our guest in Quiote at Rio Tomatlan in Canandaigua from 3 to 5 PM. If you have never seen this great singer/songwriter , you are in for a great experience. Take a look at the videos listed below, and see for yourself!

"The Journey"

The concert is free, but we do ask for donations to support our performers. Siobhan has created eight CDs, one for each of our eight seasons that were held in The Side Room of Buffalo Bill’s and now in Quiote at Rio Tomatlan. Each CD contains songs of the performers who appeared during that season. The requested donation for each CD is $10, and the proceeds go to the performers who are playing on the day of the donation. Since the performers who played in Buffalo Bill’s Side Room will now be playing in Quiote at Rio Tomatlan, the CDs will give you a good feel for what to expect in the upcoming shows.

SONGWRITERS SEASON #8 ENDS BEAUTIFULLY!

A beautiful ending to Season #8, and the beginning of, I hope, a new tradition in our songwriting series! Watkins and the Rapiers (Kerry Regan, guitar, bass, vocals; Scott Regan, guitar, vocals; Steve Piper, lead guitar, vocals; Tom Whitmore, guitar, mandolin, bass, vocals; Rick McRae, keyboard, trombone, vocals; Pete Hasler, Clarinet, trombone, keyboard, vocals; and Marty York, drums) presented to a very appreciative audience a refreshing bank of original Christmas songs, many of which easily could become timeless, unforgettable standards. Covering a broad scope of themes and using just about every available literary technique, these guys made our faces smile, our eyes glisten with tears, and our stomachs ache from laughing. These incredible holiday songs were only enhanced by excellent musicianship, terrific harmonies, and exquisite arrangements. These guys, once again, came to the game well-prepared and delivered. They played a lot of the crowd’s favorites, but, as always, they kept the show fresh with some outstanding new material, making them poster boys for this venue. They have a catalog of eighty-eight terrific, original Christmas songs, and I expect by next year that number will increase by six. So, you guessed it! Since our series ends in December, the group, if they want, will be our closer for many years to come. To our community in Canandaigua and its surrounding towns, if you missed this show, stay tuned for next year’s Watkins’s Christmas show! We want you to become part of this tradition!
Big thanks to Kerry, Scott, Steve, Tom, Rick, Pete, and Marty for a terrific show! Big thanks to Raf, Erin, Trevor, Jasmine, Julie, Chris, Mel, and the rest of the staff at Rio for all the help you give us to make this event work! Big thanks to Scott Regan for promoting these shows on WRUR’s “Open Tunings!” Big thanks to Arlene Copeland for supplying the candy canes for this special Christmas show!! Big thanks to you, the audience, for your continuous support of this venue! Without you, it would not be possible! Our next show in Quiote is on Jan. 5. Warren Paul, another of the area’s fine singer/songwriters, will be our guest for the opening of Season #9 in this series. There will be music for the brunch at Rio from Noon until Warren takes the stage at 3 PM. Stay tuned for more details about this show and “Sunday Music at Rio!” Hope you all have a Healthy and Happy Holiday Season!!

KERRY AND FORREST REGAN COME THROUGH WITH A BANNER SHOW!

There are many things we cannot control. One of them is the weather, and the storm on Sunday kept many from seeing Kerry and Forrest Regan deliver another vintage Kerry Regan show. The modest crowd did not hamper Kerry’s stellar performance one bit. His confident stage presence, something I really admire, displayed a guy totally in control of the game. In a Dylan-like fashion, Kerry used his voice, guitar, and harmonica to present many songs he wrote about his experiences during 2019, once again displaying his love for writing and his awesome, prolific ability . His well-carved lyrics were filled with both humorous sarcasm and genuine sensitivity, and they were greatly enhanced with captivating stories that most of the time made the audience laugh, but a few times brought a tear or two. Kerry usually does this show as a solo performer, but this year he added Forrest Regan, his nephew. Forrest, bassist for the Onondaga Civic Symphony Orchestra, most certainly took this show to a higher level. He was right on the money in every one of Kerry’s songs, especially when he used a bow for one of Kerry’s new Christmas songs, “Shine on Christmas Lights.” Time simply stood still as the sound of the bass pervaded the room, totally making the song come alive for me. Speaking of Christmas, Kerry will be back in two weeks with his band, Watkins and the Rapiers. This band, now in its twenty-third year, has an unbelievable catalog of original Christmas music. While some of these Christmas songs display a serious sensitivity, most of them are funny, and they give the listener a refreshing experience with Christmas music. They have been doing Christmas shows at The Little Theater in Rochester for years, and it is on my “bucket list” to make their Christmas show an annual tradition at Rio Tomatlan. So, come back and see Kerry and the rest of the band in two weeks, and please spread the word. Trust me. You will love it!

Big thanks to Kerry and Forrest for a terrific show! Big thanks to Raf, Erin, Trevor, Jasmine, Julie, Chris, Mel, and the rest of the staff at Rio for all the help you give us to make this event work! Big thanks to Scott Regan for promoting these shows on WRUR’s “Open Tunings!” Big thanks to you, the audience, for your continuous support of this venue! Without you, it would not be possible! Our next show in Quiote is on Dec. 15. Watkins and the Rapiers will be our guest for a special show of its original Christmas music. There will be music for the brunch at Rio from Noon until the band takes the stage at 3 PM. Stay tuned for more details about Watkins and the Rapiers and “Sunday Music at Rio!”

BRIAN Ayers AND His BAND DAZZLE THEIR FANS!

Every once in a while the stars align and a moment of magic occurs. If you were in Quiote this past Sunday, you would have encountered such a fabulous experience when Brian Ayers and the Ayers’s Brothers Band took the stage to give a beautiful concert of Brian’s original material. This extemporaneous delivery, guided by Brian, enthralled and warmed the hearts of a full house of enthusiastic listeners for two straight hours. Brian, a crafty veteran with excellent communication skills, pulled just about everything out of his bag of tricks to create an unbelievable splendid afternoon for his old and new followers. Besides playing some of his fan’s favorite original songs, he added his latest song, “This Is the Rough Part,” honored other songwriters who appear in our series by playing their songs (Alan Whitney, “Frankie Speed, I Like Stealing Cadillacs”; John Dady, “Elaine”), and called Jeff Riales and Mike Wittek, two performers from our series, to come up and play Jeff’s great country song, “El Dorado.” Brian, a performer in the “Show for Joe,” a memorial concert honoring Joe Dady, one of our area’s treasured musicians, took a moment to pay tribute to Joe by playing “Roll Back The Clouds,” one of Joe’s favorite songs. Joe, who died of leukemia six months ago, is still fresh in the hearts of everyone around here, and Brian brought all of us one more step closer to healing with his outstanding rendition of the song. Brian’s awesome show was profoundly enhanced by the excellent musicianship of Chad Ayers, Mike Nelson, and Jim McDermott. In addition to his beautiful backup harmony, Chad’s exquisite lead playing was greeted with enthusiastic applause throughout the show. The rhythm section, Mike Nelson, standup bass, and Jim McDermott, cajon, brought a perfect fullness to Brian’s music, and they made it look easy. Nelson knew what to leave in and what to leave out, as he always does, and McDermott probably one of the best cajon players I have ever heard, always added the right touch at the right time. These four guys were having fun with the music, and their good time pervaded the room, creating a memorable afternoon for all who were in attendance.

Big thanks to Brian, Chad, Mike, and Jim for a terrific show! Big thanks to Raf, Erin, Trevor, Jasmine, Julie, and the rest of the staff at Rio for all the help you give us to make this event work! Big thanks to Scott Regan for promoting these shows on WRUR’s “Open Tunings!” Big thanks to you, the audience, for your continuous support of this venue! Without you, it would not be possible! TYLER WESTCOTT BLOWS US AWAY AT RIO TOMATLAN!

Well most of us see Tyler Westcott lighting it up with his various groups such as Folkfaces, Paper Roses, and The Observers, and that’s just what he did in Canandaigua with Folkfaces to a packed house at Ploughshares on Saturday night. On Sunday, however, an incredible transformation occurred when Tyler came to Quiote at Rio Tomatlan with just his guitar, banjo, harmonica, and well-crafted original songs and stories of his personal life and life on the road as a full-time musician. For two hours with no intermission from the first note to the last he had his audience in the palm of his hand, and they responded enthusiastically with hoots and shouts of affirmation. The ease with which he moved from one story and song to another displayed a professionalism comparable to iconic musicians who travel the national circuit. His delivery, very similar to Arlo Guthrie’s, reflected other greats such as Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, Dave, Van Ronk, Bob Dylan, and of course Arlo’s father, Woody. Just like these greats, his honesty presented with a terrific sense of humor was beyond being refreshing and satisfying. Throughout the afternoon, sometimes I thought I was at a coffee house in Greenwich Village, and other times I thought I was sitting in a government camp along Route 66 during the 1930s. Whether rocking out with one of his bands or doing an intimate solo show, Tyler makes people happy with his music. He has found his Niche, and I look forward to more great stories and songs. I’d like to thank Tyler’s mom for grounding him a lot when he was a kid, only allowing him access to a guitar. Had she not done this, we might not have gotten this incredible singer/songwriter and performer.

Big thanks to Tyler for a terrific show! Coming right back at you with another show in one week, Sunday, November 17. Brian Ayers and Mike Nelson, two of Bloomfield’s favorite sons, will be our guests in Quiote. There will be music for the brunch at Rio from Noon until Brian and Mike take the stage at 3 PM. Brian and Mike will be filling in for John Dady, who will be involved with “Show for Joe,” a show celebrating the life of Joe Dady. Stay tuned for more details about Brian and Mike and “Sunday Music at Rio!”

THE MICHAEL YACCI TRIO COMES THROUGH ONCE AGAIN!

It’s no secret my predilection for music falls in the areas of folk, country, bluegrass, and Americana genres. Many of my former high school students often ask, “Meyer, are you still into that peace, love, and understanding hippie crap?” Yup, I am. So, when I invite to our series a songwriter who writes music with a leaning towards pop and rock with a touch of blues, it indicates he really has impressed me with his creativity. Mike Yacci has done this for the past several years, and when he came to Quiote this past Sunday with his trio, he was right on the money once again. “Tonight, I Just Want to Be with You” and “I Lost My Voice,” some great songs from previous concerts, were mixed in with several new songs, which will appear on Mike’s upcoming CD with The Michael Yacci Trio. “Swear to Me,” one of the new songs by the trio, is already out on video, and you can check it out right here. With his simply outstanding arrangements, Mike (keyboard), along with Bryan Maslin (electronic drums) and Paul Yacci (electric bass and saxophone), delivered his songs with an absolutely unbelievable precision. The band’s excellent musicianship was only enhanced by beautiful, flawless harmonies, another indication of this well-prepared, well-rehearsed group. Like me, the audience was enthralled with the music and responded enthusiastically throughout the show. I love watching these guys because they give it their all when they are on stage, enjoy being with each other, and have great interaction with the audience. Paul, thanks for playing that sax for me on a couple of songs. It was awesome!

Big thanks to Mike, Bryan, and Paul for a terrific show! Big thanks to Raf, Erin, Trevor, Jasmine, Julie, Hanna, Mel, and the rest of the staff at Rio for all the help you give us to make this event work! Big thanks to Scott Regan for promoting these shows on WRUR’s “Open Tunings!” Big thanks to you, the audience, for your continuous support of this venue! Without you, it would not be possible! Our next show will be on Sunday, November 10. Tyler Westcott of Folkfaces and The observers will be our guest in Quiote. There will be music for the brunch at Rio from Noon until Tyler takes the stage at 3 PM. Prior to his show in Quiote, Tyler’s band, Folkfaces, will be playing a private event in Canandaigua on November 9 sponsored by Brian and Kate Burley. So, I guess we have a “Tyler Westcott Weekend” coming up. Stay tuned for more details about “Sunday Music at Rio!”

JACK JONES AND HIS FRIENDS KNOCK IT OUT OF THE PARK!

The Rolling Thunder Review rolled into Rio this past Sunday for its annual show, and oh what a show it was! Jack Jones, like an aging bottle of wine, just may have delivered his best show ever in this songwriting series. A few of His new songs, possibly written on Route 21 on his way to the concert, are destined to join his greatest hits with “I’d Be Grateful,” “I Dreamed I Was a Butterfly,” “Things Gone By,” “98.7,, “My Brother Chimpanzee,” and “ Mr. Tangerine Man.” Jack’s delivery was only sweetened by the soulful and excellent playing of Kendall Wilt (harmonica and keyboard) and Fran Cary (lead guitar, dobro, and backup harmony), buddies from Jack’s band, The Stid Hill Stompers. The sweetness of the show, however, did not stop there. Bruce Diamond, well-known, all-around, quintessential musician, enhanced the presentation with some exquisite bass playing, many of the songs brand new to Bruce. Just when you think the show couldn’t get better, it did. Beth Steel, one of Jack’s long-time friends, joined the band for a couple of songs, and knocked the audience out with her beautiful voice. Throughout the afternoon, Jack and his team made the audience laugh and cry with his stories and songs of nature, love, war, and Of course, politics, but what really impressed me is these folks were having fun, and their good time spread to the audience, filling the room with an enigmatic joy, easily observed through the enthusiastic responses throughout the afternoon. Jack has plans to move to Colorado sometime in the future, but he said he’d come back to do another show. So, stay tuned!

Big thanks to Jack, Kendall, Fran, Bruce, and Beth for a terrific show! Big thanks to Raf, Erin, Trevor, Jasmine, Hanna, Mel, and the rest of the staff at Rio for all the help you give us to make this event work! Big thanks to Scott Regan for promoting these shows on WRUR’s “Open Tunings!” Big thanks to you, the audience, for your continuous support of this venue! Without you, it would not be possible! Our next show will be on Sunday, October 20. The Michael Yacci Trio (Mike Yacci, Bryan Maslin, and Paul Yacci) will be our guests in Quiote. There will be music by C & L Railroad for the brunch at Rio from Noon until Mike, Bryan, and Paul take the stage at 3 PM. Stay tuned for more details about “Sunday Music at Rio!”

THE SHOW MUST GO ON!

The show must go on, and it did. That’s just the way Joe Dady would want it. So, with all of us being stunned by the loss of Joe, Jeff Riales, Mike Wittek, and Dana fine, true class acts, took to the stage and delivered a wonderful show of Jeff’s original country music to an audience who was hurting from the loss of one of its finest musicians. With his southern drawl, Jeff’s laid-back manner and easy delivery brought smiles through the tears of many members in the house. Jeff dedicated a couple of songs to Joe, Handling this event perfectly. Along with their exquisite harmonies, Mike Wittek added some terrific lead work on his guitar and mandolin, while Dana Fine unobtrusively held it all together with some great sounds on the bass. These guys beautifully handled a somewhat delicate situation and started us all on a long road of healing.

Big thanks to Jeff, Mike, and Dana for a terrific show! Big thanks to Raf, Erin, Brittany, Trevor, Julie, Chris, Sadie, Amy, Jasmine, and the rest of the staff at Rio for all the help you give us to make this event work! Big thanks to Scott Regan for promoting these shows on WRUR’s “Open Tunings!” Big thanks to you, the audience, for your continuous support of this venue! Without you, it would not be possible! Our next show will be on Sunday, June 2. Steve Piper, one of the area’s finest singer/songwriters, will be our guest in Quiote. Stay tuned for more details about this show!

The concert is free, but we do ask for donations to support our performers.

THE BROTHERS BLUE COMES THROUGH AGAIN IN QUIOTE AT RIO TOMATLAN

What a splendid Sunday afternoon listening to the awesome sounds of a banjo, guitar, fiddle, mandolin, upright bass, and the voices of The Brothers Blue! For two awesome sets, Benny, Matt, and Charlie dazzled the crowd with their excellent singing, playing, lyrics, and stories. Whether addressing serious issues with their songs or just playing good-time songs to have fun with the audience, their genuine, sincere nature easily won over the crowd, who throughout the afternoon responded with enthusiastic applause, hoots, and even a standing ovation from one audience member for “I Am a Soldier.” Joe Dady was so right when he said to me, “These guys are the real deal!”

Big thanks to Benny, Matt, and Charlie for a terrific show! Big thanks to Raf, Erin, Brittany, Shelby, Trevor, Julie, Chris, Sadie, Amy, Jasmine, and the rest of the staff at Rio for all the help you give us to make this event work! Big thanks to Scott Regan for promoting these shows on WRUR’s “Open Tunings!” Big thanks to you, the audience, for your continuous support of this venue! Without you, it would not be possible! Jeff will be joined by Mike Wittek (guitar and mandolin) and Dana Fine (bass), two members from Jeff’s band, The Silver Tone Express. Stay tuned for more details about this show!

SCOTT REGAN, THE VOICE OF WRUR'S "OPEN TUNINGS,"DELIVERS!

Shortly after Tiger won over the hearts of his fans throughout the world, Scott Regan won over the hearts of the audience who heard him in Quiote yesterday afternoon! In this intimate setting with simply his guitar, voice, and well-crafted lyrics, he created vivid images of his experiences with life, touching on topics centering on his mother and father, war, politics, being a stay-at-home dad, nature, and philosophy. He enhanced his exquisite performance with rambling, extemporaneous, entertaining stories, which only endeared him more to an already totally captivated audience. This perfect performance was further enriched when, at times, he invited Kerry Regan, Steve Piper, and Connie Deming to join him.
Big thanks to Scott for a terrific show! Big thanks to Kerry, Steve, and Connie for joining Scott! Our next show will be on Sunday, April 28. The Brothers Blue (Ben Haravitch, Matt Sperber, and Charlie Coughlin) will be our guest in Quiote. There will be music downstairs for the brunch before The Brothers Blue takes the stage in Quiote at 3 PM. Stay tuned for more details about “Sunday Music at Rio!”

PICKIN' & GRINNIN' WITH SWIATEK, CLEAVELAND, AND HUGHES!

Great pickin’ and grinin’ and harmonies with Swiatek, Cleaveland, and Hughes in Quiote at Rio Tomatlan yesterday! The well-crafted lyrics of Paul Swiatek and Perry Cleaveland, whether in the style of blues, folk, or bluegrass, were surrounded by some incredible harmonies and guitar, banjo, mandolin, and dobro leads, and the audience reciprocated with an enthusiastic response throughout the afternoon. Ethan Hughes, a terrific dobro, guitar, and singer from Delaware, was a big hit in his debut with Swiatek and Cleaveland, and I only hope he finds a job in this area when he finishes up his degree at RIT. He would be a great addition to the Rochester music scene. Big thanks to Paul, Perry, and Ethan for a super job! Big thanks to Raf, Erin, Brittany, Trevor, Julie, Chris, Sadie, and the rest of the staff at Rio for all the help you give us to make this event work! Big thanks to Scott Regan for promoting these shows on WRUR’s “Open Tunings!” Big thanks to you, the audience, for your continuous support of this venue! Without you, it would not be possible! We’re coming right back at you with a show this Sunday, April 14. Scott Regan, a member of Watkins and the Rapiers, The Spring Chickens, and as I indicated above, the voice of “Open Tunings,” will be our guest. Whirlwood, MG Gonzalez, Perry Cleaveland, and Doug Henrie, will play for the brunch before Scott’s show. Stay tuned for more details throughout the week about Sunday Music at Rio!

Benny Bleu delivered a beauty in Quiote On “Sunday Music” at Rio Tomatlan!
