THANKS FOR SUPPORTING OUR MUSIC THIS PAST WEEKEND

Hi Folks,

It’s going to be a big note of gratitude here.  So, if you are not into reading about people being grateful, this one is not for you.

Last Wednesday, Siobhan and I played for the Stewart Family Reunion at Camp Onanda, the Canandaigua Town Park along the west side of Canandaigua Lake.  The setting was beautiful and the evening was too.  As seasoned musicians, we knew the event was not about us; it was about the family, and our job was to enhance the event while the family reunited and told stories.  So we went to work at being unobtrusive, playing our music quietly while they visited.  Throughout the evening we received some nice compliments and an occasional clap or hoot.  As the catching up faded a bit, we drew some family members into our music, and we had them dancing and singing along by the end of the evening, something that quite often happens at affairs like this.  We had a blast!  Big thanks to the Stewart Family and to Lynne Stewart for inviting us to play.

“Live From Linden,” a gathering held on Linden street in Geneva every Friday and Saturday night throughout the summer, was another blast for us!  There was a little chill in the air but it was beautiful.   Again, we assumed our unobtrusive role as musicians and played to those who stopped for dinner and drinks at the participating restaurants along the street.  Again, it was an evening filled with occasional hoots, claps, and compliments from people who stopped by to chat.  Big thanks to our friends who came out to support us.  Big thanks to Dave Linger for inviting us to play.

Saturday night at The Timbercreek Tavern was a totally different scene for us.  Members from “Table #1” and “ Meyer and McGuire’s Drunken Choir” showed up to engage in a sing-along, and oh what a sing-along it was!  It was awesome hearing your voices.  Big thanks to Brenda Clark for conducting the singers during the evening.  Big thanks to all of you who purchased our new Meyer and McGuire T-shirts, which arrived on Friday.  Big thanks to Barbara Cromwell for creating the prototype for the T-shirts, inspiring us to have them made.  Big thanks to Susie for inviting us to play.

Sunday afternoon put us back in our unobtrusive role once again, and it was probably one of the most beautiful settings we have ever played.  We were on a porch overlooking Keuka Lake with its awesome vistas, playing for the ice cream social sponsored by the Arts Center of Yates County.  Folks purchased bowls donated by some of the area’s potters, filled them with some delicious ice cream, and listened to our music.  Again, listeners responded with occasional claps, hoots, and compliments.  They stopped by to chat a little, and we made some new friends.  Big thanks to all who came out to support this neat little fund-raiser.  Big thanks to Casey Kowalski for inviting us to play.

Well, that’s it from Parkside.  Can’t thank you enough for supporting our music.  Truly grateful for every moment we get to play for you.  Norman Lear, an American television screenwriter, film and television producer, best known for his creation of “All in the Family,” just turned 100 on July 27, and he is still working.  In a recent NPR interview, he indicated we move through life from “It’s over.” To “What’s next.”  In between those two points are the moments we live, and he savors them more now than ever.  As I age I feel myself doing the same thing, and I encourage all to do likewise.  Savor those moments and have a great Week!

Love,

Siobhan and Frank

ENJOYING THE 4TH OF JULY!

I played my first private event in Canandaigua in the summer of 1974  in the living room of Betty Hennihan, a well-respected primary school teacher in the Canandaigua City School District.  The house, located on Gibson Street,  is now owned by Sharon and Jeff Trumbull, Betty’s daughter and son-in-law.  Needless to say, I had an absolute blast playing at Betty’s gathering.  Fast forward to 2022, forty eight years later, and I am still playing private events around here, but now it’s with my partner of forty years, Siobhan, making these private events even sweeter.  For Siobhan and me, our music has been and always will be  just a vehicle we use to connect with people and have fun with them.  Our goal is to try to add a special touch to each event we play.  I only bring this up because we are relaxing on this beautiful 4th of July day after playing for two great parties over this beautiful 4th of July weekend.

First, a big thanks to Rita and Richard Deboerdere for having us play at their twelfth anniversary party on Saturday.  It was great connecting with them and their family and  friends again.  As always, the food was delicious, and the shared stories were, as usual,  quite entertaining.  Rita and Richard, wishing the two of you many more years of health and happiness!

On Sunday, Perry Cleaveland joined us for the Seneca Yacht Club’s annual 4th of July party.  We have played this event for many years, and it’s always a blast.  The pandemic prevented us from playing there for the past two years; so, the return this year made playing for the event that much sweeter.  A big thanks to all the members of the club for your warm welcome, enthusiastic response to our music, and your genuine compliments throughout the evening.  A big thanks, as always, to Perry Cleaveland for joining us and, once again, taking our show to a higher level.  A big thanks to Chrissy West for connecting us with the club so many years ago and giving us the opportunity to meet up with so many wonderful people.

Many of you reading this have had us play at some private event for you over these past forty eight years; so, thanks again for letting us into your lives.  Siobhan and I were lucky to find each other, and we were even luckier to be able to use guitars to make a difference in the lives of people.  For this, we are forever grateful.  Hope you and your family and friends had a terrific 4th of July weekend

BRING IN SUMMER WITH THE BEACH BOYS!

Back in the Dark Ages When I was a teenager, it wasn’t summer unless you heard The Beach Boys being blasted at pool and lake parties and from cars as they raced down the highways.  For me, the group was merely a symbol of innocence, fun, and simplicity.  Brian Wilson, Dennis Wilson, Carl Wilson, Mike Love, and Al Jardine created great memories for many of us.  Al Jardine lived in Rochester during his early childhood years.  This connection to Rochester earned him a membership in the Rochester Music Hall of Fame, Class of 2019.

Here is a playlist of some Meyer and McGuire songs mixed with our favorite Beach Boys’ s songs:  Surfer Girl, When I Grow Up, Wouldn’t It Be Nice, In My Room, Kokomo,Good Vibrations, Fun, Fun, Fun, Sloop John B, Wendy, Barbara Ann, Warmth of the Sun, Help Me Rhonda, I Get Around, Little Deuce Coupe, & California Girls.  Happy Summer!  Enjoy!

RECONNECTING WITH OLD FRIENDS AND COLLEAGUES

Two appropriate shows on graduation weekend!  A big weekend of connecting back to the days at CA!  On Friday, Siobhan and I played a last minute happy hour show at Iron Smoke Distillery.  Coincidentally, the late night band was Taran, a well-known rock group with two of its members being former CA students, Todd Tarantello and Bob Maslin.  Jim Shelton, another CA grad, was running sound for the band.  It was great seeing the guys, and we got to listen to their first set as we packed up.  They were terrific!

A big thank you to everyone who came to Iron Smoke for the happy hour.  We had a blast playing our tunes for you, and your positive feedback was much appreciated.  Big thanks to Tommy and Jen Brunett for supporting our music, and a big thanks to Casey, Mike, Julie, Caitlin, and the rest of the staff at Iron Smoke for being so friendly and helpful.  We’ll be back at Iron Smoke on  July 16.  Stay tuned.

On Saturday, the CA connections continued.  Bill and Chris Clark, CA grads,  asked us to play for their parents’ 50th wedding anniversary.  Coincidentally, their mother, Margaret, was a friend and colleague of ours at CA before she went to teach in Geneva.  Needless to say, it was great catching up with all of the family and their friends, many of whom we knew from the CA days.  A big thanks to Bill and Chris for asking us to play.  A big thanks to Perry Cleaveland for joining us for this show and taking our music to a higher level as he always does.  Congratulations to Bill and Margaret, and we wish them another 50 wonderful years!

Hope you all had a great weekend!  Enjoy what is left of it, and we hope you have a great week!

GOING BACK TO 1978!

In 1978, I was in my fourth year of teaching English at Canandaigua Academy.  I became part of the group, Meyer Miller and Mulligan, a group who played throughout the Rochester and Finger lakes Regions.  Carol Mulligan and Steve Miller were two of the finest friends and bandmates anyone could ask for.  Many great memories.   The music of 1978 served as a backdrop to the following events:

·         Egypt and Israel sign the Camp David Accords.

·         People's Temple Jonestown Suicides.

·         First Solo North Pole Expedition.

·         United Kingdom - First Test Tube Baby Born.

·         The first Garfield comic strip.

·         Susan B. Anthony Dollar.

·         US Teachers strike.

·         US Dollar plunges.

The playlist here mixes Meyer and McGuire songs with songs from 1978: Billy Joel, Kansas, Paul Simon, Linda Ronstadt, Chrystal Gayle, Jackson Browne, Bob Seger, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Kenny Rogers, and Dan Hill.  Enjoy!

SPRING CHICKENS SAVE THE DAY!

Hi Folks,

In the morning, I put on a pair of Bluetooth headsets and grab my phone and tune into WRUR 88.5 .  As I walk around getting my day organized before I hit the treadmill, I listen to Morning Edition with host Beth Adams who gives me perhaps the best account of what is going on in the world.  Unfortunately, it usually contains stories about violence, war, viruses, injustice, climate change, and the never ending political chasm developing in our country.  At 9 AM - usually on the treadmill by now-  Morning Edition gives way to Open Tunings with Scott Regan.  Scott’s presentation of terrific eclectic music takes me to another place, and it allows me to decompress from all the depressing news I just absorbed.  Trust me. I am getting to the point.

Yesterday, the ugly news I received was Maria Gillard, one of the treasured performers in our Parkside Poets’ series, texted me to let me know she was very sick, and would not be able to perform with her trio that afternoon.  I called Scott Regan and asked him if he and his group, The Spring Chickens, could fill in for The Maria Gillard Trio.  Scott got back to me within a half hour telling me the Chickens were on board.  So, once again, Scott Regan was able to let me decompress from some disappointing news.  Not only did The Spring Chickens save the day, but because they were able to fill in for Maria’s trio, it opened up the door for Maria to play in their spot originally scheduled for June 19.  More details about Maria’s upcoming show over the next couple of weeks.

A big thanks to The Spring Chickens for delivering an absolutely wonderful show on such a beautiful Sunday afternoon.  Their entertaining off-the-cuff banter was intertwined with beautiful, sensitive songs.  Three of my favorites of the day were “Ocean of Stars,” Scott Regan; “This Life,” Steve Piper; and a beautiful song by Connie Deming about a Vietnam veteran, "Steps."

Big thanks to the audience for their enthusiastic response to the show.  Also, it was great to see so many new people in our yard, and I enjoyed how you veterans greeted them with opened arms.  Once again, you made our home yours for the day, and please keep doing it.  Big thanks to all who brought snacks to share.  Not necessary, but much appreciated.

Big thanks to our team, Ray Hackett, Dawn Goben, and Julie Bertram.  Ray and Dawn do a lot of behind-the-scenes work in helping us get ready for the show.  Julie, as you can see from her photos on FB is our resident photographer, and she does a wonderful job at it.

Well, if you are still reading, stay tuned for more details about the upcoming Maria Gillard Trio show on June 19.  No, it’s not Groundhog’s Day!

Love,

Siobhan and Frank

GRATEFUL TO JERRY GARCIA!

I have  been a fan of Jerry Garcia since the late 1960s.

Of his many groups, New Riders of the Purple Sage  1969 - 1971), Old and in the Way (1973 – 1974), and The Grateful Dead (1965 – 1995) are my favorites.

I only saw Jerry live one time.  It was with The New Riders of the Purple Sage in the gym of Colgate University in Hamilton, NY. I believe it was sometime in 1970/71, and Jerry was playing pedal Steel and banjo.  He was terrific.!  The rest of my experiences with Jerry were lived vicariously listening to my students talk about the Grateful Dead shows they attended.  Their stories were awesome, and I loved them!  It was my students who really turned me on to Jerry’s music, resulting in me learning the following songs: Henry (New Riders), The Glendale Train (New Riders), Panama Red (New Riders), Friend of the Devil (Grateful Dead), Ripple (Grateful Dead).  Of these songs, Glendale Train, Friend of the Devil, and Ripple still appear on our setlists.  So, a big thanks to my students for turning me onto Jerry!  Brought me a lot of great times!

Here are some of my favorite songs of Jerry Garcia.  Friend of the Devil, Uncle John’s Band, Truckin’, Ripple, Sugar Magnolia, Casey Jones, Fire on the Mountain, Touch of Gray, Box of Rain, The Golden Road, Scarlet Begonias, Sugaree, Not Fade Away/Goin’ Down the Road, Franklin’s Tower, Ramble on Rose, Henry, Glendale Train, Panama Red, Old and in the Way, Midnight moonlight, The Hobo’s Song.  Enjoy!

THANKS FOR COMING TO THE TIMBERCREEK!

Hi Folks,

Well, we always wondered what it would be like if members of “Table #1” and “Meyer and McGuire’s Drunken Choir” showed up at the same show.  We found out last night at The Timbercreek, and it was simply splendid. big thanks to them and all our other friends who were there to partake in the fun.  Listening to you sing along gave Siobhan and me the juice to play better, making it an awesome night for us.  A special thanks to Brenda Clark, our resident music conductor at The Creek for getting the crowd involved in the show.

Big thanks to Susie, Hillbilly, and Brandan for serving up some delicious bar-fare and tasty drinks throughout the evening.

We’ll be consulting with the committee to determine the best time for our next show at The Creek.  Stay tuned!

Regarding Mother’s Day, my mom has been gone for quite some time.  I don’t miss her, but I thank her.  She still lives on in me, and here’s why.  She did the best she could with what she had, inspiring me to do the same.  When you see me, you’re really seeing her.  Regarding Siobhan’s mom, she’s ninety-three, and I see her every Monday.  She does not know Siobhan and me, but she is a pleasure to be with.  She, too, has passed on her beautiful qualities to her daughter, kindness, understanding, generosity, and a terrific sense of humor.  So, when you see Siobhan, you’re also seeing her mother, Joan.

Have a wonderful week!

Love,

Siobhan and Frank

GRATEFUL TO THE BAND

I have  been a fan of The Band since the late 1960s.

MUSIC FROM BIG PINK, the group’s debut album recorded IN 1968,,was recorded in Saugerties, NY, my home town.

Members of the quintet were as follows: Robbie Robertson, Levon Helm, Rick Danko, Richard Manual, and Garth Hudson.

Favorite songs from the album:  The Weight, Long Black Veil, I Shall Be Released.

The songs were recorded in the basement of a house with pink siding.

Unfortunately, I never met any members of the group, and I  have never been to Big Pink.  The group’s music, however, encouraged me to start learning to play guitar, which took me down a road I never would have imagined, and I am eternally grateful for this.  So, that’s what MUSIC FROM BIG PINK did for me.

Here are some of my favorite songs of The Band  (not all from MUSIC FROM BIG PINK): Up on Cripple Creek, Atlantic City, The Weight, The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, I Shall Be Released, It Makes No Difference, Country Boy, Four Strong Winds, The Shape I'm In, Life Is a Carnival, Twilight, Acadian Driftwood, Stage Fright, and Ophelia.  Enjoy!

RELEASED TODAY ON ALL THE MAJOR STREAMING PLATFORMS!

“Sometimes It’s Never Over,” our newest song, is being released on all the major streaming platforms today.

It’s a song depicting the harmful impact words can have on us.  These words, often painfully true, leave an indelible impression, and we are destined to live with the anguish from them forever.  Siobhan and I recorded this one with a piano, guitar, harmonica, and bass.

Here are the lyrics:

Verse 1

We sat out on the back deck in the quiet of twilight

Watching as the sun slowly set and the day slipped into night

The summer air was so oppressive, but not as heavy as our hearts

The sad sound of a mourning dove hinted soon we'd be apart

Chorus:

They say nothing last forever, and I wish that this was so

But sometimes it's never over, 'cause we just cannot let go

Verse 2

We looked off into the distance, neither uttering a word

Truth had come to visit us, and he wanted to be heard

"Is there something I can do?" she sat still and did not speak

Then I saw her body start to shake, and the tears rolled down her cheeks

"I can't take the way they look at you with such pity in their eyes

I am not strong enough for this; so, I have to say goodbye."

Chorus:

Instrumental Break

Verse 3

As I sit here in this tavern, staring down into my beer

I am thinking of her final words; it's been over forty years

Though I do not want to think of them, they just still invade my mind

Just like a life-long affliction, they will stay with me through time

Chorus
