Meyer and McGuire: News and Music Schedule

Hi,

Hope you all are staying warm! Siobhan and I just got back from spending an awesome week in Dallas visiting with Tom and Jeanne Murphy, good friends from Saugerties, NY, my home town. While we were there, I met up with Jim Atkinson, an old friend from Colgate, and I got to jam with him at the White Rock Sports Bar, a place where Jim hosts the Sunday Jam session. What a blast! Finally, I met up with Dave Smith, one of my former students from Canandaigua Academy, the high school where I taught English. What a neat coincidence it was to meet up with people from three significant stages of my life! It doesn’t get any better! Now, here’s what I have for you in this post.

This blog started out giving you posts of the songwriter’s notes, lyrics, and music for my original songs. As with many things, it has gone in new directions. So, if you just started reading my post and are interested in my original material, here is a link to my songwriter’s notes, lyrics, and music.
Frank’s Songwriter’s Notes, Lyrics, and Music

Last month, Siobhan and I did something we have not done in a long time. We hosted an open mic at Brew and Brats at Arbor Hill, an eatery and entertainment center behind the Arbor Hill Winery & Grapery in Naples, NY. What a blast it was! We are going to do it again this month, and The date, time, and address for this event can be found on our music schedule listed at the end of this message. Last month we had some great performances given by Harry, Keith, Bob Dugan, Mac Johnson, Joe Preston, and Tim Chaapel, and we’d like to see the list of performers grow. So, on February 8, Siobhan and I will be there again to run the sound. Of course, we will fill in the down-time with our music, but we hope to see many of you show up with your guitars, banjos, mandolins, fiddles, harmonicas, etc. You can perform as a solo, and if you want some backup, we’ll find it for you. If you are not a player, come out and enjoy the food, beverages, and entertainment! Hope to see you there!

As always, thanks for supporting original music! Perry Cleaveland and Paul Swiatek put on a great show at the “Singer/Songwriters in the Side Room” concert in January. Siobhan will have a video of one of their songs from that show ready for my next update in a couple of weeks. In the meantime, I just want to give you a little introduction to Maria Gillard, the songwriter who will open up season three of the “Singer/Songwriters in the Side Room” concert series at Buffalo Bill’s. Siobhan and I first met Maria in 1981, and the three of us just connected immediately. We often go through long stretches of time without seeing Maria, but when we see her, we pick up like it was yesterday. She is a natural on stage, and her genuine, sincere nature draws you to her. Her terrific personality is only enhanced when she picks up her guitar, and with her awesome voice, she delivers one of her powerful songs. For this show, Maria will have her trio with her, Perry Cleaveland (mandolin, fiddle, and vocals) and Elaine Verstraete (bass and vocals). Perry and Elaine, like Maria, are down-to-earth people who really know how to have fun with an audience. I’ll have more details about Maria as we get closer to the show, but if you have the time, check out these videos of Maria doing some of her original material.

”It Used to Be Darker”
”Steady Woman”
”Must Be I’m in Love”
”Imagine My Surprise”

Now, if you want to know more about Maria and her interesting, creative endeavors, here is a link to her web site. Hope you can join us for the show!

Well, have to go for now. Below is a list of our dates for February. Hope to catch you at a show! Take care!

All the best,
Siobhan and Frank

Meyer and McGuire Present Perry Cleaveland and Paul Swiatek in the Side Room

Hi,

This blog started out giving you posts of the songwriter’s notes, lyrics, and music for my original songs. As with many things, it has gone in new directions. So, if you just started reading my post and are interested in my original material, here is a link to my songwriter’s notes, lyrics, and music.
Frank’s Songwriter’s Notes, Lyrics, and Music

On Thursday, 1/16, Perry Cleaveland and Paul Swiatek will be our performers at the “Singer/Songwriters in the Side Room” concert. Perry, an accomplished mandolin, fiddle, and guitar player who performs with several groups, is getting together with his long-time friend, Paul Swiatek, an excellent guitar, banjo, harmonica, and mountain dulcimer player. When I first asked Perry to do the concert, he suggested that Paul, mostly a lyricist, and he, mostly an instrumentalist, could put together a well-balanced show of original bluegrass, folk, and country music. I have heard both of them play, and I think Perry is “right on” with his suggestion. Trust me! These guys will get your toes tapping and energy flowing! If you have the time, check out these videos of Perry backing up some of the performers we have had at our concerts.

Now, if you want to know more about Paul and his interesting, creative endeavors, here is a link to his web site. Hope you can join us for the show!

The concert takes place on the third Thursday of every month in the side room of Buffalo Bill’s Family Restaurant and Taproom, 19 Main Street, Shortsville, NY. The show runs from 7 to 9 PM. The concert is free; however, we compensate the performers with whatever donations we can gather from the audience. To learn more about Buffalo Bill’s, check out their site right here:

Ian, Ron, and Lyle Boni were our guests in December. To give you a feel of the setting of these concerts, here is a video of the group doing one of Lyle’s songs, “Do What You Want.”

This month, Siobhan and I are doing something we have not done in a long time. We are hosting an open mic at Brew and Brats at Arbor Hill, an eatery and entertainment center behind the Arbor Hill Winery & Grapery in Naples, NY. The date, time, and address for this event can be found on our music schedule listed at the end of this message. I am giving you a heads-up about this venue because it is a really cool place. Siobhan and I have done a few shows there over the past couple of summers, and the owners and staff there are very down-to-earth, hard-working people who really know how to have a good time! They put out some great wine, beer, and food, especially their home-made ice cream sandwiches! Brew and Brats, only opened on the weekends, originally just opened for the summer months, but now it is opened year round. During the winter months, the venue on Saturday nights is a little different than it is in the summer. Rather than having just one group do a show, the stage is opened to anyone who wants to perform. So, on January 11, our first night of hosting the open mic, Siobhan and I will be there to run the sound. Of course, we will fill in the down-time with our music, but we hope to see many of you show up with your guitars, banjos, mandolins, fiddles, harmonicas, etc. If you are not a player, come out and enjoy the food, beverages, and entertainment! Meyer and McGuire Present Ian, Ron, and Lyle Boni in the "Side room"

Hi,

I hope the upcoming holiday season brings you many great times with your family and friends!

On Thursday, 12/19, Ian, Ron, and Lyle Boni will be our performers at the “Singer/Songwriters in the Side Room” concert. If these names are not familiar to you, maybe Troyka, Naked Gray, In The Loop, The Rolling Bones, The Hayes Brothers, and Hazer will ring a bell. Ian and Lyle are, and were, the driving forces of these groups for nearly forty years.

I first ran into Lyle in the 1970s when he was the singer and lead guitar player of the renowned Hayes Brothers, a group who got its start in Shortsville. For nearly four decades this band brought many great nights of music to a myriad of clubs and private parties throughout the Finger Lakes region. After George Hayes, the last of the Hayes brothers, left the group, the band changed its name to Hazer, and now with Lyle’s son, Ian, they continue to play great rock n roll music throughout the area.

I first ran into Ian in the 1990s at Canandaigua Academy, the high school where I taught. He was not one of my students, but I watched his talents develop from a distance. Like Lyle, Ian is a phenomenal guitar player, and when the two perform together in The Rolling Bones, they are simply outstanding. In addition to the Rolling Bones, Ian is the lead guitar player and singer in Troyka, Naked Gray, and In The Loop.

Now, what about Ron Boni? When I first asked Ian to do this show as a solo performer, he said he would like to ask his Uncle Ron to join him, because he thought he was a terrific songwriter who is rarely heard. Ron, a busy massage therapist, does not perform very much publicly. I saw him play with Lyle in a small club several years ago, and Ian is right. He’s good!

A few days ago, Ian informed me that Lyle was going to join him and Ron for this show. So, The Boni’s are coming together to give you an evening of their original music in an intimate setting. You may get them to do one or two covers, but do not count on much more than that. You will hear the stories and songs that reflect their experiences and observations. Hope you can join us on December 19 when the Boni family comes back to where music all started for Ron and Lyle, Shortsville, NY!

Leslie Lee and Steve Gretz and Perry Cleaveland were our guests in November. To give you a feel of the setting of these concerts, here is a video of the group doing one of Leslie and Steve’s songs, “Immigrants.”

Meyer and McGuire: News and Music Schedule

Hi,

Hope you all had a great Thanksgiving, and I hope the upcoming holiday season brings you many great times with your family and friends!

As always, thanks for supporting original music! Leslie Lee and Steve Gretz and Perry Cleaveland put on a great show at the “Singer/Songwriters in the Side Room” concert in November. Siobhan will have a video of one of their songs from that show ready for my next update in a couple of weeks. In the meantime, I just want to give you a little introduction to Ian and Ron Boni, the duo who will be performing at our next “Singer/Songwriters in the Side Room” concert at Buffalo Bill’s on December 19 from 7 to 9 PM. Ian, an accomplished guitar player and songwriter who performs with several groups, is getting together with his Uncle Ron for this show. When I first asked Ian to do the concert, he asked me if he could do the show with Ron because he felt Ron was a terrific songwriter who very rarely performs. I’ll have more details about them as we get closer to the show, but if you have the time, check out these videos of Ian with his group Troyka at the Lilac Festival in 2012. Fear not. You will not be hearing Troyka at the next concert in the side room. I only encourage you to listen to these videos to get a sense of Ian’s talent. It’s terrific, and I am sure when he hooks up with Ron, you will get a great evening of original acoustic music!
Troyka at the Lilac Festival

Well, Siobhan and I finally got off our lazy butts and recorded the basic tracks for four new original songs at Rich Cooley’s studio. Rich, a friend and neighbor, lives .4 miles from our house; so, it doesn’t get any better. After the holidays, we are bringing Bob Spadafora and Perry Cleaveland, two of the nicest guys you would ever want to meet, into Rich’s studio to dress up our basic tracks. If you are from the Auburn area, you may know Bob. He was the lead guitar player for the legendary Blue Lights for over thirty years. Currently, Bob is the lead guitar player for Streetwise, a well-known rock group in the Rochester area, and Bob is the lead singer and guitar player in Key Dreamers, a local acoustic duo. Now, if you don’t know Perry, you are not from this galaxy. Just like Raymond, “Everybody Loves Perry!” He has played and recorded with so many groups it would be impossible to list them all here. As Bob is with a guitar, so Perry is with a mandolin and fiddle, and we are excited to have them add their talents to our new songs. The songs are as follows: “Livin’ Small,“ “Last Man Standing,” “Just One,” and “When You Were Cute and I Had All MY Hair.” If you haven’t heard these songs, here is a link to videos of Siobhan and me rehearsing them on our back porch:
Back Porch Videos of Frank and Siobhan
If you have any suggestions regarding what instruments we should add to the basic tracks, send them to me. We’d appreciate it!

Well, have to go for now. Below is a list of our dates for December. Hope to catch you at a show! Take care and have a great holiday season!

All the best,
Siobhan and Frank

Meyer and McGuire Present Leslie Lee and Steve Gretz (with guest Perry Cleaveland)

Hi,

On Thursday, 11/21, Leslie Lee and Steve Gretz will be our performers at the “Singer/Songwriters in the Side Room” concert. Perry Cleaveland, who seems to be the resident mandolin and fiddle player at our concerts, will come downstairs from his apartment over the restaurant and accompany Leslie and Steve for this show. The three of them played a terrific show in 2012, and we are glad to have them back! If you don’t know much about them, here are a few links to check out:

"'Til September" (A video of one of their songs from last year’s show at Buffalo Bill’s)

For those of you who are worried about this concert being a church service, relax! Steve is an ordained minister in the American Baptist Churches USA. (They are the Baptist who will talk to you even if you disagree with them.) Steve and Leslie have some great stories, and both have great senses of humor. Trust me! You’ll have fun!
Hope you can join us on November 21!

The concert takes place on the third Thursday of every month in the side room of Buffalo Bill’s Family Restaurant and Taproom, 19 Main Street, Shortsville, NY. The show runs from 7 to 9 PM. Meyer and McGuire: News and Music schedule

Hi,

Hope you are all doing well! Here’s what I have for you in this update.

I can’t thank you enough for supporting original music! Eva and the Dog Boys put on a fantastic show at the “Singer/Songwriters in the Side Room” concert in October. Siobhan will have a video of one of their songs from that show ready for my next update in a couple of weeks. In the meantime, I just want to give you a little preview of Leslie Lee and Steve Gretz, the group who will be performing at our next “Singer/Songwriters in the Side Room” concert at Buffalo Bill’s on November 21 from 7 to 9 PM. Perry Cleaveland will be joining Leslie and Steve with his mandolin and fiddle. I’ll have more details in a couple of weeks, but if you have the time, check out this video of them doing their song, "'Til September," at a show they did for us in the side room in 2012.
"'Til September"

For those of you who are spread around the globe and never get to see any of our shows, here is a video of Siobhan and me on our back porch rehearsing “Livin’s Small,” another new original song we are getting ready to record with some friends as soon as we can get off our lazy butts. Hope you enjoy it!

Well, have to go for now. Below is a list of our dates for November. Hope to catch you at a show! Take care!
