On Thursday, 4/7, John and Cathy Cadley and their guest Perry Cleaveland and John Danks will be our performers in the “Side room” at Buffalo Bill’s. I hope this little description from their web site entices you to come to their show!
“John and Cathy Cadley are one of the area’s most entertaining and popular duos. Following in the tradition of great male-female duets like Ian & Sylvia and Emmylou Harris and Gram Parsons, they show how the simplicity of two voices and two acoustic instruments can produce powerful music.
Their repertoire draws on the traditional bluegrass of Bill Monroe and the Stanley Brothers, the tight harmonies of the Louvin Brothers, the “new acoustic” sounds of Alison Krauss and Claire Lynch, and John’s own originals, which have been recorded by national bluegrass artists such as Tony Trischka, Jim Hurst, Missy Raines, and Lou Reid, who, with Vince Gill and Ricky Skaggs singing harmony, took John’s song, “Time,” to the #1 spot on the national bluegrass charts for three consecutive months. Cathy’s resume is equally impressive, including 21 years leading a church and gospel group in her hometown of Fayetteville, NY.
Their live concerts feature everything from traditional mountain ballads and bluegrass classics like “Bury Me Beneath the Willow” and “Blue and Lonesome,” to Alison Krauss’ “The Lucky One,” to the Louvin Brother’s “Cash on the Barrelhead.” And just to add a few surprises, you’ll also hear a great acoustic rendition of Paul McCartney’s “I Will,” a few of John’s originals from his Nashville-produced solo CD, The Closer I Get, and Cathy’s knockout version of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” For an evening of soulful duet singing and tasty picking on guitar and mandolin, the Cadleys are not to me missed.”

SINGER/SONGWRITERS IN THE SIDE ROOM PRESENTS BRIAN AYERS

On Thursday, 3/3, Brian Ayers will be our performer in the “Side room” at Buffalo Bill’s. If you don’t know much about this renowned singer/songwriter from the Rochester/Finger Lakes Region, here’s some info I snatched from the web about Brian’s group, Blue Jimmy. Currently, the group is taking a little hiatus from performing. Brian is the lead singer, and this bio of the group should give you a good feel for Brian’s dedication to the craft. Hope it entices you to come to the show!
“Growing up and still based in the small town of Bloomfield, New York (just southeast of Rochester, New York), the five members of Blue Jimmy are comprised of two sets of brothers and a lifelong best friend. Brian Ayers (acoustic guitar, harmonica, lead vocals), Chad Ayers (electric guitar, mandolin, harmony vocals), Steve Nelson (drums), Mike Nelson (bass guitar), and Greg Gefell (electric guitar, pedal steel, resonator, harmony vocals). All spent time in the music program at Bloomfield Central, where the seeds of theory were planted and the bricks of friendship laid at a young age. In addition to writing, recording, engineering, mixing and producing their own music, Greg, Chad and Steve all play instruments they made themselves. Steve is president of his own company, which builds custom drum kits. Chad made one of the guitars he plays and Greg plays a pedal steel that he built from scratch. Lending an even more down home and unique sound to the group. It is no wonder that they create their music the same way. Crafting songs from a solid heartfelt foundation, technically sound and artistically free, winning the listener over time and time again.
It is with this twenty-plus year bond in life, musical pursuits and friendship that Blue Jimmy has built a loyal regional following. Landing them supporting act slots and praise from such national touring artists as: Travis Tritt, Billy Currington, Steve Holy, Kenny Rogers, Pure Prairie League and many others. Further accolades include airplay and in-studio performances on many of Rochester, New York’s major radio stations. 92.5 WBEE FM, 96.5 WCMF FM, 98.9 WBZA FM, as well as airplay in Syracuse, New York.”

On Thursday, 2/25, Maria Gillard, Perry Cleaveland, and Elaine Verstraete will be our performers in the “Side room” at Buffalo Bill’s. This engaging trio opens every Side Room concert series, and this year they are starting Season #5 for us. If you don’t know them, here’s some info I snatched from the web. “Maria Gillard is a talented singer, songwriter, and educator from the Finger Lakes Region of New York State. Best known as a folk musician, she has grown to embrace a wider style range including jazz, swing, and blues. She leads the Maria Gillard Band, a four-piece Rochester-based swing/jazz band. She is also revered in folk and bluegrass circles, often toting a mandolin and singing impeccable harmonies.
Her compelling voice draws you into her lyrics which, when combined with memorable melodies, head straight for the heart. Maria’s songs offer wise, humorous, and sometimes painful observations on life and relationships. She tells stories through her music in ways that are soul stirring, evocative, contagious, lively and energizing. When you listen to Maria’s songs, you feel her heartache and, more often, her joy and delight at life’s experience. She has a warm, inviting, natural flair, which leaves audiences wanting more and coming back!
As an educator, Maria received a bachelor’s degree in Music from SUNY Potsdam’s Crane School of Music. She is a music instructor and directs a vocal jazz ensemble at Finger Lakes Community College in Canandaigua, New York. She has worked for the Aesthetic Education Institute as a teaching artist, given concerts and held workshops in schools and nursing homes for many years. She teaches private voice, piano and guitar lessons in her home and has toured as a folk musician throughout the northeast
Perry Cleaveland is a SAMMY Award winning mandolinist who also adds lead and harmony vocals, fiddle, lead guitar and clawhammer banjo. Born in Louisville, Kentucky Perry emigrated to Syracuse, N.Y. and grew up in a household that hosted many bluegrass luminaries during his formative years. In his High School years, and continuing later, he began playing in a number of New York State Bluegrass bands including: Hard Times, Pleasant Valley, Bristol Mountain Bluegrass, Rosewood, John Rossbach & Chestnut Grove, The McCarthy Paisley Band, and Lost Time. He has performed for festivals, colleges, clubs, private parties, corporate events, arts centers, schools, town concerts, PBS/NPR affiliates: WCNY, & WXXI, and New York State Council on the Arts-sponsored events, including Arts in Education series’ under the auspices of Young Audiences of Rochester.
His innovative mandolin playing keeps him in demand as a recording session player throughout New York State having played on projects by many regional Bluegrass, Old Timey and Folk artists such as: Joe Davoli, Maria Gillard, John Cadley, Ted Lambert, John Stevens, Andrew and Noah Van Norstrand, Jim Clare, Northwater, The Atkinson Family, Lisa Bigwood, Rebecca Colleen & the Chore Lads, Meyer & McGuire Brian Coughlin, and those bands as previously listed. Perry recently shared a CD release with the Rochester's Impressario of 'Songwriters in the Round', Brian Coughlin, and, as well, is featured on a new project from Meyer & McGuire. He is currently working on a project of his own original melodies and musings.
Elaine (Eva) Verstraete Bassist and lead/tenor vocalist is a fast study. Elaine is in real life a respected illustrator and university faculty member, who draws from a wide-ranging musical background. She has a restless desire to sing almost anything and has drawn heavily from her strong family musical history. Known for her photogenic Germanic face, her athletic figure, and survivalist instincts, she leads by example. Eva draws from a wonderful musical experience with Lisa Bigwood and The Washday Band and is currently a member of Eva and the Dog Boys and one half of regional recording artists , birds-on-a-wire, with her close friend, Brooke Pevear.”

SINGER/SONGWRITERS IN THE SIDE ROOM PRESENTS JOHN CARTER

This blog started out giving you posts of the songwriter’s notes, lyrics, and music for my original songs. As with many things, it has gone in new directions. On Thursday, 2/4, John Carter will be our performer in the “Side room” at Buffalo Bill’s. John, who has been playing music in the Rochester and Finger Lakes areas for about twenty-five years, will be showcasing his original material for us.
I first met John back in 1989 when he was a sophomore at Canandaigua Academy. He snoozed through my English classes because, like most teenagers, he stayed up way too late and was forced to get up way too early. I’d like to tell you he was working hard on his homework during these late evenings, but my fingers refuse to let me type such a statement. Instead of getting an A in my class, he, like most under achievers, got a C and moved on with his life. (I know I just violated some law of privacy; so, I apologize.) I lost track of John when he left my class, and it wasn’t until years later I discovered what he was doing during those late evenings when he wasn’t doing his homework. He was teaching himself to play guitar, sing, learn a wide variety of covers, and write songs.
Years after John left high school, Siobhan and I heard him play, and here are the qualities that drew us to him. His voice is smooth and has an unbelievable range, and he accompanies it with an intriguing guitar style. Rather than using his voice and guitar to imitate other artists, he takes their songs and creates his own interpretations. It’s easy to see he has been influenced by a myriad of artists, because his repertoire is quite extensive. I have heard him interpret songs by John Lennon, Paul McCartney, James Taylor, Van Morrison, Tracy Chapman, Joni Mitchell, and the list goes on. The ideas and techniques of these artists, who have influenced John, appear in his original music, and his creations are well-worth a listen. Finally, one last thing that drew me to John is his stage presence. He connects with his audience with a healthy dose of humor, sarcasm, and humility, essential traits to have when performing.
To my knowledge, John has no music awards. He was not a finalist in the renowned Kerrville Folk Festival. (I believe we have more Kerrville Folk Festival finalists than we have illegal immigrants.) What he has is genuineness. What you see is what you get, a perfect fit for the Side Room. So, if you come to listen to his original music, your soul will be enriched, and you’ll have a great time!
I do not have a video of John playing any of his original music, but to give you a feel of his sound, Here he is being backed up by Casey Bloom on lead guitar.

The concert is free, but we do ask for donations to support our performers. Siobhan has created three CDs, one for each of our three seasons. Each CD contains songs of the performers who appeared during that season. The requested donation for each CD is $10, and the proceeds go to the performers who are playing on the night of the donation. The CDs have gotten good reviews, and we hope they get passed around to let others know about the great talent we have appearing at this venue.
The concerts take place on the first and third Thursdays of every month in the side room of Buffalo Bill’s Family Restaurant and Taproom, 19 Main Street, Shortsville, NY. The show runs from 7 to 9 PM. To learn more about Buffalo Bill’s, check out their site right here:

SINGER/SONGWRITERS IN THE SIDE ROOM PRESENTS EVA AND THE DOG BOYS

On Thursday, 1/21, Eva and the Dog Boys will be our performers in the “Side room” at Buffalo Bill’s. This engaging trio, known for delivering its bluegrass music with attitude, will focus on its original material for this show. Regarding the band members, here’s what I found on their web site:
“John (MandoBoy) Denniston - Mandolin and Tenor/Lead Vocals JD can’t hide anymore - he’s developed into one of the Northeast’s top mandolin players. As a lifelong resident of Palmyra, he and his patient wife, Maureen, have three children. Steeped in the classic Bill Monroe mandolin-playing tradition, John has developed into a serious musical performer. “MandoBoy” has also greatly extended his vocal range to become a key lead and tenor voice. He has been a part of Seneca County Bluegrass, Lisa Bigwood and The Washday Band, and Cabin Fever.
Tom (TBone) Farley – Guitar virtuoso and sometimes old time banjo picker brings a thoughtful appreciation for all kinds of acoustic music and usually is pivotal in the instrumental arranging of the new songs. As a guitarist and frequent lead vocalist (he also sings baritone), “Bone” owns our single microphone so we’re extra special nice to him. His playing experience includes Lisa Bigwood and The Washday Band, Cuttin’ the Grass, The New Aliens, and many revisits of The Dugway Dirt Band.
TBone is married to the lovely Suzanne and they have a beautiful daughter, daughter in-law, grandson, Alex - and new grandson, Lance.
Elaine (Eva) Verstraete Bassist and lead/tenor vocalist is a fast study. Elaine is in real life a respected illustrator, who draws from a wide-ranging musical background. She has a restless desire to sing almost anything and has drawn heavily from her strong family musical history. Known for her photogenic Germanic face, her athletic figure, and survivalist instincts, she leads by example. Eva draws from a wonderful musical experience with Lisa Bigwood and The Washday Band and was one half of regional recording artists , birds-on-a-wire, with her close friend, Brooke Pevear.”

On Thursday, 1/7, Fred and Alex Vine will be our performers in the “Side room” at Buffalo Bill’s. They will be presenting their original material. I hope Fred’s impressive bio entices you to come to their show!
“As a singer and guitar player, Fred Vine is a familiar name at coffeehouses, festivals and clubs throughout upstate New York. He is a native of Rochester, NY.
Fred is primarily a folk blues player. His finger-picking and bottleneck slide blues are expressive
and accomplished. His musical tastes are eclectic. Using a traditional finger-style technique, he expands his repertoire to include dazzling arrangements of jazz, ragtime, original and contemporary songs.
Fred has the talent and open-mindedness to be flexible with whatever audience he is working with… "Really what I do is go in and make sure that everybody has a good time".
Fred fell in love with the guitar when he first picked it up at age twelve. With the sound of the Beatles in his head, he began teaching himself by ear. Later in his career, Fred studied jazz with renowned Rochester guitarist Dick Longale. He also broadened his knowledge by taking Music Theory at the Hochstein School of Music.
Among his many influences are Rev. Gary Davis, Robert Johnson, Jelly Roll Morton, Muddy Waters, Chet Atkins and Duke Ellington. As an electric guitar player in rhythm and blues bands during the 70's, Fred had the opportunity to share the stage with legendary performers including Muddy Waters. Recently as a solo act he has shared the stage with John Hammond, Dave Van Ronk and Guy Davis at the 12 Corners Coffeehouse. Fred's passion for the music inspired him to research it. He developed "The History of Blues and Jazz," a presentation designed for continuing education. He also teaches guitar.
Fred has recorded two CD's. "Mister Freddie Blues" is a collection of solo acoustic blues and jazz including two live tracks from a 12 Corners Coffeehouse performance. "Cruising on the Belle" is a mixed bag of folk songs he plays on board the tour boat "The Colonial Belle" on The Erie Canal. His music can be heard on theWITR (89.7 FM in Rochester) radio show "Bad Dog Blues.”
For this show, Fred will be joined by his son, Alex, an up and coming singer/songwriter and guitar player.

Among his many influences are Rev. Gary Davis, Robert Johnson, Jelly Roll Morton, Muddy Waters, Chet Atkins and Duke Ellington. As an electric guitar player in rhythm and blues bands during the 70's, Fred had the opportunity to share the stage with legendary performers including Muddy Waters. Recently as a solo act he has shared the stage with John Hammond, Dave Van Ronk and Guy Davis at the 12 Corners Coffeehouse. Fred's passion for the music inspired him to research it. He developed "The History of Blues and Jazz," a presentation designed for continuing education. He also teaches guitar.
Fred has recorded two CD's. "Mister Freddie Blues" is a collection of solo acoustic blues and jazz including two live tracks from a 12 Corners Coffeehouse performance. "Cruising on the Belle" is a mixed bag of folk songs he plays on board the tour boat "The Colonial Belle" on The Erie Canal. His music can be heard on theWITR (89.7 FM in Rochester) radio show "Bad Dog Blues.”
For this show, Fred will be joined by his son, Alex, an up and coming singer/songwriter and guitar player.

The concert is free, but we do ask for donations to support our performers. Siobhan has created three CDs, one for each of our three seasons. Each CD contains songs of the performers who appeared during that season. The requested donation for each CD is $10, and the proceeds go to the performers who are playing on the night of the donation. The CDs have gotten good reviews, and we hope they get passed around to let others know about the great talent we have appearing at this venue.
The concerts take place on the first and third Thursdays of every month in the side room of Buffalo Bill’s Family Restaurant and Taproom, 19 Main Street, Shortsville, NY. The show runs from 7 to 9 PM. To learn more about Buffalo Bill’s, check out their site right here:

SINGER/SONGWRITERS IN THE SIDE ROOM PRESENTS GORDON MUNDING

This blog started out giving you posts of the songwriter’s notes, lyrics, and music for my original songs. As with many things, it has gone in new directions. On Thursday, 12/17, Gordon Munding will be our performer in the “Side room” at Buffalo Bill’s. He will be presenting his original material. I hope this impressive bio entices you to come to his show!
“From upstate New York, Gordon Munding is an accomplished Blues, Roots and Folk musician. He is part of Rochester N.Y.'s Blues and Folk scene and a respected friend and peer. Way back in the 70s and 80s after meeting and opening for guitar gurus like Doc Watson and Richard Thompson, Gordon began to master the Piedmont and Delta guitar styles himself. He has also since mastered the resonator guitar, playing and teaching students this unique style, emulating the blues masters, while encouraging original improvisation. Frank DeBlase, of Rochester's City Newspaper, describes Munding's style as: "He dances across old National strings with red clay overtones in the swampy air. Crisscrossing with Appalachian, Bluegrass & Delta Blues, arising from the smoke of an impending collision." In another article Frank listed Munding as one of his “favorite guitarists” in Rochester’s eclectic music scene. In 2006 Gordon started a weekly tribute to Delta blues legend Son House (who was rediscovered living in Rochester N.Y. in the 60s). This jam continues today, almost 10 years later, now hosted by Bluesman Genesee Johnny. Gordon has opened for many national acts, including: Doc Watson, John Hammond & John Mooney. He has fronted local & regional bands, including "Blue Delta", and most recently "The Crawdiddies. He currently performs solo and teaches blues and finger-style guitar in workshops, festivals, and schools.
Since Gordon won Rochester NY's 1st Stan Rodgers songwriting contest way back in the 80's, he has continued to write successfully having his music aired on Ithaca, Jamestown and Rochester radio stations.”
